Mobile Press-Register: Extending definition of scholarship would change college football landscape

At its spring meetings this month, the Big Ten stared down the 500-pound gorilla that the rest of college athletics has been avoiding. Its commissioner and athletic directors talked about, and are apparently seriously considering, paying players. Sort of.

They weren't talking about issuing paychecks. They were discussing the feasibility of providing funds for living expenses -- transportation, clothing and the like -- to the tune of an estimated $2,000 to $5,000 per player.

It would be, essentially, extending the definition of a scholarship to cover the actual cost of attendance -- an idea supported by NCAA president Mark Emmert and his late predecessor, Myles Brand, and one that SEC commissioner Mike Slive said last month is worthy of consideration. ...

Still beats the "TCU Athletics" books at I got in '69. Could have offered to buy a few rounds at the Frog Pond with $2000 per year.
