Men's Basketball vs Utah

First time in a long time for me too, agreed. I was unpleasantly surprised.

Aberrant free throw shooting is bad, we all agree. While we don't shoot them great, last night was an outlier, even for us. Nobody liked the way that game went, nobody.

That said, in my opinion though, we have every right to be sad or displeased, but we gotta be careful of that booing and similar behavior like just trashing these kids online (you never know what gets back to whom.)

Those guys out there physically look like grown ass men, but they're still in their early 20s if not late teens. And I remember being that age. Something like being booed and trashed by grown adults who are supposed to support me would have affected my psyche. Maybe even to this day, but not to that degree.

Also... is there a chicken-and-egg effect? Quite possibly. After all, the Frogs shot felt like 33% from the line, but we the fans probably only filled that place 33% full. That HAS to be disheartening to see for the players as the tip draws close. Yeah, I know, it's not the most entertaining product, even when we win. Hard to get there on time from work for some, I get it. But the BYU game on Saturday was similar. It's not like the Scholl seats 50k. We can do better as fans. We KNOW the team plays better with an excited crowd, we see it in small samples.

We have guys we want to keep for the future on this team. Giving them an empty stadium to play in front of, booing, and then trashing them online - how in the world is that supposed to help retain talent? I say "help" because I know we're not in control of everything. But come on men, we're sure as heck in control of ourselves. And if you're so miserable in general that you feel it's a good idea to come post the 15th version of the same complaint, or boo a bunch of young men who are probably just as frustrated as you, maybe reconsider that possibly it's not.

I'll disagree on the free throw shooting. Frogs are shooting free throws at a 64% clip. That's not good.

I don't know what the solution to the free throw shooting woes is but it doesn't seem to be getting better.

The solution is practice free throws, a lot. Some of guys look like they’ve never shot one before. That makes no sense. The game could have easily been a lot closer if they had made half of them. Imagine if they made 70%, they probably would have won. That’s a difference maker even when you are having a bad night in all other phases of the game.

Since the 1989-90 season, TCU has average .677 from the free throw line (if my math is correct), with a high of .765 in 99-00 and a low of .593 in 04-05. It's nothing new.

I know it is nothing new.
Just don't understand why a program just can't shoot free throws consistently.
Currently, the Frogs are 348th of 354 teams shooting free throws.

That's fair. It wasn't too far off the 64% pace. 10 of 21, 47.6% Would have been worse without Micah Robinson being pretty decent at them.

Fun facts, if we hit our normal 64% (+3 makes), that 6 point lead we just couldn't get past in the second half would have been a one possession game a few times. If we hit 75%, which most teams should, it's a 2 point loss at the end, so one missed bunny or one extra stop from OT.

If we hit the same percentage as we did vs Montana St., 89%, we win by one last night, even playing quite poorly vs other efforts. Man we let one get away...

If the defense denies those easy drives down the lane in the lane that led to easy baskets things might have been different.

What is really amazing is the amount of point blank shots the Frogs miss almost bunny shots at times. Anything within two feet of the basket just won't fall at times.

Right. It's bizarre how many close ones we've missed. I wonder if this is unique to us. That's something I have noticed a little more in modern basketball, maybe an emphasis on trying to draw fouls.

The one thing I can't wrap my head around from last night was why the staff kept insisting on the double-the-entry-pass defensive method, which Utah had figured out basically in the first half. Thought we might switch things up to stop scrambling around in an impossible rotation.
