James Maness

I have heard James passed away this morning.
This was in the Decatur paper today

He was 61. The TCU Hall of Famer had been battling Alzheimer’s disease. After his decorated college career, Maness was drafted by the Chicago Bears and was on the 1985 Super Bowl team. Maness retired from football and his business career in Azle. A private family gathering will be held in lieu of services. The family requested that those wishing to honor Maness consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation

James L. Maness
TCU Football and Track & Field '84

It is with a heavy heart that the Block T Association announces the passing of TCU Football and Track & Field Letterwinner, and TCU Hall of Famer, James Maness. James passed away on Sept. 21, following a lengthy battle of early onset Alzheimer’s and dementia.

A two-sport letterwinner for the Horned Frogs from 1981-84, Maness claimed All-America honors in both track and football. In track, he earned All-America distinction in two different relay events. In 1983, he anchored the 4x100 relay team that earned a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The following year, Maness participated on the 4x400 relay team that also placed sixth at the NCAA finals.

As a wide receiver, he was a third-team All-America selection in 1984 after registering 871 receiving yards, which at the time was the second-highest single-season total in TCU history. An all-SWC performer his junior and senior seasons, Maness' 2,171 career receiving yards ranked fourth in school history upon completion of his football career. He currently ranks ninth all-time in career receiving yardage. In addition, his 99-yard touchdown catch from Scott Ankrom against Rice in 1984 still ranks as TCU’s longest passing play in school history.

Maness was a third-round draft choice by the Chicago Bears in 1985 and played eight games in the National Football League (NFL) for the Super Bowl champions. Maness was inducted into the TCU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.

A private family gathering will be held in lieu of services.

When he was drafted by the Bears in 1985, I told some Bear fans about him. I saw him grab one of those close balls that Jim McMahan threw at Soldier Field during his rookie season. RIP

Probably the fastest of the Flying Frogs. His 99-yard TD reception from Scott Ankrom will never be beaten.

None of us are as young as we think.
Was that at ACS against Rice the week after beating Arkansas 32-31 up there? It was a great play....Part of an 8-3 regular season and the first bowl game season since 1965 against Texas Western (UTEP today)....

I was at Meacham Airport when the team flew in from Arkansas. What a game that was. I think they landed about 1 or 2 in the morning. We ran out on the tarmac to greet the plane.
