Idaho Statesman: Mountain West Conference’s quest for automatic-qualifer status faces uncertain path

LAS VEGAS — It’s difficult enough to predict how the Mountain West Conference will perform on the football field this year.
It’s almost impossible to forecast how several issues surrounding the conference’s bid for automatic-qualifier status in the Bowl Championship Series will be handled.
For starters, nobody knows who will be allowed to vote on the league’s expected request at season’s end to the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee for an exemption from the qualification criteria.
“All we can do is continue to do what we’ve done on the field — and that’s win and perform,” Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson said. “The politics and the rest will come into play and be sorted out.” ...
