TCU Walks Off With 15-Inning Victory

FORT WORTH - It took almost five and a half hours, but TCU came away with a thrilling 5-4 15-inning victory over Dallas Baptist Tuesday night. The Patriots sixth error of the night allowed Kyle Bacak to score the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 15th.
An error by the second baseman allowed Bacak to reach to open the 15th. Two batters later, Bacak was standing on second. Boomer White hit a routine grounder to third, but the throw across the diamond sailed into foul territory and Bacak raced home with the game-winning run.
"Sometimes you need something crazy to jump-start your season," said head coach Jim Schlossnagle. "It's one game, but certainly if we can play well over the course of this homestand maybe we can look back at this as something special. I'm really proud of our players, but really, really proud of Brian Howard and Brian Trieglaff."
The run ended a contest that saw both teams with chances to win in extra innings. TCU's best chance came in the 13th as it loaded the bases with nobody out. Dallas Baptist pitcher Cory Taylor pitched out of the jam with a pop up and a double play.
The Patriots had a chance in the 14th with a runner on second and one out. Brian Trieglaff (1-0) came on in relief and got a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Keaton Jones saved a run with a leaping grab on a line drive to end the inning.
Trieglaff collected his first career victory, retiring all five batters he faced. Along the way he struck out a career-high three batters.
The bullpen did yeoman's work in relief of Jordan Kipper (5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K), surrendering just one unearned run in 10 innings pitched. The group of Trey Teakell, Travis Evans, Riley Ferrell, Brian Howard and Trieglaff held Dallas Baptist to just five hits, walked four and fanned 14.
"Those guys haven't pitched much coming in and Ferrell was outstanding. For them to do what they did was really impressive," raved Schlossnagle. TCU opened the scoring in the third inning, picking up a run without the benefit of a hit. Connor Castellano and Keaton Jones walked to open the frame and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice from Bacak. A wild pitch allowed Castellano to score for the 1-0 lead.
The Frogs added to their lead in the fourth. Another lead-off walk, this time to Boomer White, came back to haunt the Patriots. Derek Odell followed with a base hit and an errant pick-off throw allowed White to move to third. Walker Pennington grounded out to give the Frogs a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, the lead grew to three. Keaton Jones led off the inning with a base hit. A walk and an error had the bases loaded with nobody out. White hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Jones for a 3-0 lead.
Disaster struck for the Frogs in the sixth as the Patriots scored four runs to take the lead. Mike Wesolowski led off the inning with a base hit and scored on a home run from Austin Listi. Back-to-back singles followed to put the tying run on third with nobody out. An errant pick-off throw allowed the tying run to score and moved the go-ahead run to third. A passed ball gave the Patriots their first lead of the night.
Dallas Baptist threatened to push the lead to two in the eighth after a one-out double from Justin Wall. With two outs, Wall was still standing on third when Nash Knight lined a single into left field. White came up throwing and threw a strike to home. Bacak applied the tag to keep the deficit at one, setting up the ninth-inning rally for the Frogs.
A one-out walk to Cody Jones in the top of the ninth gave the Frogs life as they battled back to tie the game at four. Jones stole second and scored on a double down the left field line off the bat of White to tie the game at four, setting up the wild finish.
TCU improves to 8-4 with the victory. The Horned Frogs will wrap up a four-game homestand this weekend when they host Michigan State beginning Friday night at 6:30.
