Bullpen tosses 11 1/3 scoreless innings

Final Stats | Notes

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Josh Elander's fifth hit of the night broke a 3-3 tie in the 12th inning and led the TCU Horned Frogs to a 7-3 win over UTSA Tuesday night. The victory is the sixth straight for TCU.

Kevin Allen (2-0) was brilliant in relief, holding the Roadrunners to one hit in four innings of work with four strikeouts. Nick Frey started and was touched for three runs on five hits in 2/3 of an inning. Trey Teakell tossed 3 2/3 innings, limiting UTSA to four hits and striking out two. Justin Scharf threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Kaleb Merck struck out two in the 12th.

Braden Mattson started the 12th inning with an infield single and Kyle Von Tungeln worked a two-out walk to keep the inning alive. With runners on the corners, Elander hustled down the line to beat out an infield single, allowing Mattson to score the go-ahead run. An error on a ball hit by Jason Coats made it a 5-3 contest. Axel Johnson doubled the lead with his first career hit as he singled in two insurance runs to give the Frogs a 7-3 lead.

TCU got on the board first, picking up a run on two hits in the first inning. Brance Rivera led off the game with a double and moved to third on a Von Tungeln sacrifice. Elander gave the Frogs the 1-0 lead with a single to left.

UTSA responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs on five hits. After Frey got the first out, five straight Roadrunners reached base. A single by Daniel Rockett tied the game and Casey Selsor gave them the lead. Trey Teakell came on and got the final out of the inning, leaving the bases loaded.

The Frogs cut into the Roadrunners lead in the third inning. Von Tungeln walked with one out and moved to third on a base hit from Elander. The speedy junior made a risky play when he raced home on a ball in the dirt that rolled just in front of the plate. He beat the tag to pull the Frogs within one, 3-2.

TCU completed the comeback in the top of the fifth inning, taking advantage of a lead-off walk to Rivera. He stole second and scored on Elander's third hit of the evening.

UTSA threatened to regain the lead in the bottom of the frame as it loaded the bases with only one out. Scharf came on and struck out Jake Wood looking before getting Colby Braddock to ground out to end the inning.

The bullpens took over from there as neither team could get anything going. Allen retired 12 of the 13batters he faced, setting up the Frogs four-run 12th inning.

The victory improves TCU to 8-6 on the season. The Frogs will begin conference play Friday night when they travel to Las Vegas for a three-game series with UNLV. First pitch at Earl E. Wilson Stadium is set for 8 p.m. (CST).
