Scouting Oklahoma State
The Cowgirls return 10 starters and six All-Big 12 performers from a 2010 team that finished the year ranked No. 5 by the NSCAA with a 20-4-2 overall record and third-straight Big 12 title. OSU was recently selected to finish first in the Big 12 Conference in 2011 and boast four players on the preseason all-conference team in forwards Krista Lopez and Kyndall Treadwell, defender Melinda Mercado and goalie AD Franch.

In its last outing, OSU battled SMU to a 1-1 draw in an exhibition match. Senior Annika Niemeier netted the Cowgirls’ lone goal of the match from six-yards out off an assist from junior Megan Marchesano.

TCU-OSU Series History
Oklahoma State currently holds a 2-1-0 advantage in the all-time series against the Frogs, including a 4-0 win last year in Fort Worth. TCU won the lone meeting in Stillwater by the score of 3-2 in double overtime in the 2000 season.

Last Time Out: at Houston (Exhibition)
Senior Alex Mechalske netted a pair of goals on back-to-back shots to lead the TCU women’s soccer team to a 2-2 tie in an exhibition match against Houston Saturday at Robertson Stadium. The Frogs were hitting on all cylinders to start the day as Mechalske scored on the opening strike of the match. Sensing that the Cougars were still playing on their heels, senior Kristen Halverson brought the ball up on the ensuing possession to setup Mechalske’s second goal in a matter of minutes, giving TCU a 2-0 lead at the 3:50 mark.

Frogs on the Tube
The 2011 Mountain West women’s soccer television schedule will feature four TCU regular season matches on The Mtn. - MountainWest Sports Network. The first television broadcast of 2011 will feature the Sept. 18 non-conference match-up against Northwestern State live from Fort Worth, followed by the second broadcast of the year versus Northern Arizona on Sept. 23. Two league matches are also slated to air on national television as TCU welcomes Air Force and Wyoming to Fort Worth on Oct. 14 and Oct. 16, respectively.

Preseason Rankings
In a vote by the league’s head coaches, TCU was recently selected to finish fourth in the Mountain West Conference this fall.

TCU is predicted to finish behind San Diego State, who received 34 points and four of the seven first-place votes, New Mexico and UNLV. Following TCU, who received 20 points, Wyoming and Boise State were predicted to finish in fifth and sixth place, respectively, while Air Force rounded out the conference with a total of seven points.

TCU Roster Breakdown
With seven of 11 starters returning this fall, TCU returns plenty of experience in 2011. Of the 28 players listed on the Frogs’ roster, there are seven seniors, five juniors, eight sophomores and seven freshmen. The Purple and White returned 20 players total from the 2010 roster and added eight new faces during the offseason.

Local & International Leaders Join TCU Coaching Staff
TCU head coach Dan Abdalla announced the addition of Jay Fitzgerald and Ted Copeland to the Horned Frogs’ coaching staff on Aug. 10. Fitzgerald was named a full-time assistant coach, while Copeland joined as a volunteer assistant coach.

Fitzgerald had been coaching high school and club soccer in the North Texas area for 11 years and joins the Frogs from his previous positions as the head coach at Nolan Catholic School and as the Director of Coaching for the West Division of Sting Soccer Club. He served as the head coach at Nolan since 1998, tallying a head coaching record of 187-72-25. He earned Coach of the Year honors for TAPPS District 1-6A from 2000-2002 and took the Lady Vikings to the state finals seven times.

Copeland brings a wealth of international soccer coaching experience to TCU, highlighted by his time as the head coach of the England Women’s National Team from 1993-98, where he was instrumental in the development of the women’s game at all levels. Copeland guided the national squad to the U.E.F.A. Cup semifinals in 1995, the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup in Sweden in 1995 and qualified for the Atlanta Summer Olympics in 1996.
