GoFrogs: No. 8 TCU Topples No. 9 Texas A&M, 2-1

FORT WORTH – No. 8 TCU held off No. 9 Texas A&M for a hard-fought 2-1 win Sunday night in front of a Garvey-Rosenthal attendance record 2,994 fans. Brandi Peterson accounted for the game-winning goal in the 77th minute.

The Rundown
TCU took control of the match early and never took its foot off the gas. The hard work was rewarded in the 11thminute as the Horned Frogs grabbed the lead. Jenna Winebrenner started the push downfield as she found Brandi Peterson streaking down the sideline. Attempting to cross the ball to a hard-charging Messiah Bright, Peterson's pass deflected off the right leg of an Aggie defender for an own goal and a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, TCU carried play for the first 10 minutes. Bright and Michelle Slater each had looks, but couldn't convert. A lot of back and forth ensued, but neither team was able to create many chances.

TCU finally got its insurance goal in the 77th minute. Gracie Brian fed Oli Pena at the top of the 18. Pena worked the ball to Peterson who battled to get some space between her and a defender. Her shot bent just inside the far post for a 2-0 lead.

Just 10 minutes later, the Aggies got on the board to cut the deficit in half on a goal by Taylor Pounds. Texas A&M kept pushing for the equalizer, creating back-to-back corners in the 87th minute, but TCU weathered the late push and held on for the win.

Quotes of the Game

On the atmosphere:
"We were hopeful we could draw a crowd like this playing a worthy opponent like Texas A&M. I'm thankful. We are really blessed to have support like this. It doesn't happen everywhere in the country. I know the players really appreciate it."

On defeating a highly-ranked opponent:
"I told the group that now that we've got the monkey off our back in beating A&M, now we can have the confidence that we can beat anyone we play. Hopefully it propels us to a quality non-conference schedule and then into Big 12 play."
