Final Stats

OGDEN, Utah - The fifth-ranked TCU Horned Frogs used an early surge to take an 11-6 victory over Utah in the opener of a three-game series.

Bryan Holaday put on a hitting show with two home runs, a double and four RBIs. Matt Purke improved to 8-0 on the season with seven solid innings of work. On the mound, Matt Purke battled through the cold conditions to earn his eighth win of the season (8-0). He allowed five runs on five hits in seven innings of work. The left-hander walked four and struck out seven. After allowing a third inning home run, Purke retired 12 of the next thirteen batters he faced, including nine in a row. Paul Gerrish allowed a run on two hits in two innings of relief to close out the contest. He struck out three batters

TCU wasted no time jumping out the early lead in the game as the first four hitters reached base. Brance Rivera led off the game with a single and moved to third on a Bryan Holaday double. Jason Coats made it a 2-0 game and scored on a Matt Curry double to give the Frogs an early 3-0 lead.

Utah took advantage of a two-out walk to cut into the deficit. C.J. Cron delivered an RBI-single to left field to make it a 3-1 contest.

A two-run blast by Holaday with two outs in the top of the second got the run back and extended the Frogs lead to 5-1. Aaron Schultz had led off the frame with a base hit through the left side.

TCU kept its streak of scoring in every inning alive in the fourth as it picked up another run in the third inning. Joe Weik singled with one out and moved to third on a double off the bat of Taylor Featherston. Jerome Pena executed, delivering a sacrifice fly to center field for a 6-1 lead.

Cron came through for the Utes again in the bottom of the third as he delivered a three-run home run to left center to pull Utah with two, 6-4. Rick Cornu was hit by the pitch leading off the inning and Nick Kuroczko worked a walk to set up Cron's three-run home run.

Again, the Frogs had an answer as they put up another three spot in the top of the fourth. Utah starter Jordan Whatcott had retired the first two batters before he plunked Rivera. Holaday launched a Whatcott offering far over the left field fence for another two-run blast. Coats worked a walk and Curry doubled to plate Coats, giving the Frogs a commanding 9-4 lead.

Two solo home runs in the fifth extended the Frogs lead to 11-4. Pena connected for a one-out home run, his sixth of the season, to right field. Witte's second home run of the season came with two outs in the inning.

Utah picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it an 11-5 contest. Cron drove in his fifth run of the night with a seeing-eye single through the right side.

The Utes added another run in the eight on back-to-back doubles from Gavin Green and Cooper Blanc to make it an 11-6 contest.
