HOUSTON, Texas - The 11th ranked TCU Horned Frogs capitalized on four errors by the Houston Cougars, scoring four unearned runs in a 6-1 victory. The Frogs scored six unanswered runs from the sixth through ninth innings to wrap up the series win.
Jimmie Pharr drove in three runs with three hits, including two doubles in the game.
After a shaky first inning, TCU starter Kyle Winkler was lights out as he improved to 5-0 on the season.He allowed a run on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings of work. The sophomore struck out five and walked three. Even more impressive were his two pick-offs that that ended Cougar threats in the third and seventh innings. Tyler Lockwood was impressive in his 2 1/3 innings of work, retiring all five batters he faced.
At the plate, the Frogs tallied 10 hits led by three from Pharr. Matt Curry finished the night with two. Jerome Pena picked up an RBI with his lone hit of the night.
The Cougars struck first, scoring a run on a pair of hits in the bottom of the first inning. Blake Kelso singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a walk to Zak Presley. Caleb Ramsey made it a 1-0 contest with a base hit to right with nobody out. A one-out walk to M.P. Cokinos loaded the bases. Kyle Winkler limited the damage with back-to-back looking strikeouts to end the inning to keep it a one-run deficit.
Houston starter Tyler Hammock handcuffed the Frogs through the first five innings of the game. He worked out of a jam in the fourth after issuing two walks to Curry and Pharr, getting Josh Elander to ground into the inning-ending double play.
TCU finally broke through in the sixth, knotting the game at one. Jason Coats singled with one out in the inning. Pharr came through with a big two-out double to deep center, driving in Coats from first.
A costly error in left field in the seventh inning saw the Frogs take a 2-1 lead. Aaron Schultz singled with one out. He stole second and moved to third on an errant throw by the catcher. Pena hit a fly ball to left that looked like an easy play, but Ramsey misplayed the ball and Pena was standing on second with the Frogs in the lead.
In the eighth inning, the Frogs stranded the tying run on third on an outstanding catch by Brance Rivera in center. Ramsey doubled down the right field line and was standing on third with two outs. Lockwood got Matt Murphy to hit a shallow fly ball to center. Rivera raced in and snared the ball on the fly to end the inning, stranding the tying run at third.
Carrying a 2-1 lead into the ninth, the Frogs pushed hard to pick up an insurance run. Jantzen Witte singled to lead off the inning. Pena delivered with a double to the gap in right center, giving TCU a 3-1 lead. Another error proved costly as it allowed Pena to score to make it 4-1 game. Pharr's second double of the night broke the game open as both Curry and Coats raced home to give the Frogs a 6-1 lead.
Lockwood shut the door in the bottom of the ninth to record his second save of the season.
TCU improves to 22-7 on the season. The Frogs will go for their second sweep of the season Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Steven Maxwell will toe the rubber for the Frogs and face Houston's Michael Goodnight.

* With his two pickoffs tonight, Kyle Winkler now ranks second on the team. TCU has tallied nine pick offs this season.
* Jason Coats and Brance Rivera extended their hitting streaks to five games.
* Jimmie Pharr notched his second three RBI night of the season and had a season-high with his three hits.
