Horned Frogs Drop Heartbreaker In Double Overtime

TCU missed on several scoring opportunities throughout the contest.

BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - In a physical back-and-fourth match, TCU totaled 15 shot attempts on Friday night, but dropped a 1-0 double overtime heartbreaker to San Diego State at the SDSU Sports Deck.

Overall, TCU, who dominated during stretches of play on Friday, missed on several scoring breakaway's throughout the match, including a shot by Jordan Calhoun in the first overtime period that hit the post. Senior Jackie Torda appeared to have given the Horned Frogs a 1-0 victory late in the second half, but her shot in the 87th minute was derailed by the crossbar. In total, the Purple and White found themselves deep in Aztec territory throughout the conference opener, just missing as several balls either bounced off the post or hit the crossbar. SDSU held a slight advantage in shot attempts on Friday night, 21-15. Torda and Calhoun both posted three shots apiece, respectively.

In the 108th minute, Sarah Halverson netted the gamewinner off an assist from Michaela Dejesus from 25 yards out into the upper left corner of the goal.

Early in the contest, Chelsey Wilgenburg, a California native, tried to light up the scoreboard, but her shot was saved by Aubree Southwick. A few moments later, defender Katie Taylor received a pass and fired away, just missing over the top half of the goal.

Calhoun almost put the Frogs ahead by one midway through the first half off a free kick, but Southwick came up with another big save to keep the score knotted at 0-0.

In the 34th minute, freshman Brittany Slyman pressured SDSU, barely missing to the left of the goal. Calhoun continued the TCU attack in the 41st minute, but her shot sailed high to keep the score at 0-0 heading into halftime.

TCU came out of the halftime break firing away, but couldn't find the back of the net. In the 54th minute, Slyman found herself wide open in front of the net, but missed wide left. Kristen Halverson tried to connect in the 67th minute from just outside the box, barely missing high over the top of the crossbar.

Senior Chelsea Cody appeared to give the Horned Frogs a spark late in the second half, but her shot after a mishandle by the Aztec defense sailed wide right. Freshman Kristen Barg continued the Frog pressure 7 minutes later, but watched as her shot went high.

Late in the second half, Kim Castleberry and Torda tried to secure the TCU victory, missing in the 81st and 87th minute, respectively. Castleberry found herself wide open on a breakaway, but couldn't put TCU ahead. Torda's shot just missed the top half of the goal, nicking off the crossbar.

Following regulation, Calhoun looked to have moved the Frogs to 1-0-0 in conference play, but her shot from the right side of the field hit the post. During the second overtime period, Kaylie Garcia and Torda both had chances, but couldn't beat Southwick. Garcia's shot in the second overtime period came on a one-on-one chance after Southwick dropped the ball, but the junior pushed the ball high.

Kelsey Walters posted seven saves on Friday, while Southwick made three stops at the SDSU Sports Deck.

With the loss, TCU moved to 5-6-1 on the year and 0-1-0 in conference play. San Diego State improved to 3-7-3 overall and 1-0-0 in conference action.

The Horned Frogs will look to get back to their winning ways on Sunday against Houston Baptist. Start time is set for 1 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
