GoFrogs: Chew Wins USATF Vern Gambetta/Young Professional Award

FORT WORTH – TCU track and field assistant coach Marissa Chew was honored as this year's recipient of the Vern Gambetta/Young Professional Award from USA Track & Field (USATF).

The award recognizes a young coach in the first 10 years of his/her career that has shown an exceptional level of passion and initiative in Coaching Education. This award is presented annually to recognize one individual who has exemplified passion and leadership nationally for the promotion of USATF Coaching Education.

Chew is entering her third year as an assistant coach for the Horned Frogs. She currently coaches the combined events and vertical jumps. Last season, Chew coached Elise Dobson (pentathlon) and Jill Johnson (heptathlon) to Big 12 podium finishes in their first season as collegiate multi athletes. Johnson's sixth-place finish at the 2023 Big 12 OTF Championships broke the school record in the heptathlon (5037) and Dobson's eighth-place finish at the 2023 Big 12 ITF Championships (3602) set the school record in the pentathlon.

She also aided Quinn Calhoun and Benjamin Kirbo to Big 12 podium finishes and spots on TCU's All-Time Top 10 List in the pole vault. Jade Ferrell set the school record in the outdoor high jump (1.73m) which Johnson also tied later in the outdoor season.

Collectively, Chew's 2022-23 season saw three school records, 10 athletes break onto TCU's All-Time Top 10 List and five podium finishes at the 2023 Big 12 ITF and OTF Championships.

Chew also was named to two of the 2023 USATF international coaching staffs. She was named an assistant women's coach and traveled to both the 2023 NACAC U23 Championships and the 2023 Thorpe Cup. Team USA won gold on both sides of the Thorpe Cup with Chew as an assistant coach.

She has achieved the highest certification through USATF as she is trained Level 3 in Jumps. She also has Level 2 training in Combined Events and Sprints/Hurdles/Relays. Through USTFCCA, she also has certification in Strength and Conditioning.
