Calhoun Leads TCU Past Toledo Friday, 1-0
Senior Jordan Calhoun collects her 30th career goal
LUBBOCK, Texas - The TCU women's soccer team had to battle through a hard-fought match to kick-off the Red Raider Classic, upending Toledo by the score of 1-0 at the John Walker Complex Friday.
"I thought our team did a good job in the second half tonight," TCU head coach Dan Abdalla said. "I'm really proud of the way we took control of the things that we could handle. Our communication was great and I thought that we played with conviction, which was a real difference maker. We were able to get control and create some chances late in the game."
The Horned Frogs (3-3) made their lone shot on goal count, as senior Jordan Calhoun found the back of the net to pick up her first goal of the season in the 68th minute. The Norman, Okla., native knocked in the game-winner on her only attempt of the night, collecting a program-best 30th score of her career. The program's all-time leading scorer made her first start since the season opener at Oklahoma State.
"The goal was a great individual effort for Jordan," Abdalla said. "We were able to catch their backline stepping forward and she had to use some of her craftiness to create the opportunity. That's exactly what we have been missing without her out there and we need her to create more chances as we move forward."
Senior Kristen Halverson rattled off a pair of shots in the match, while Katie Taylor and Brooke Kviz also threatened with a strike.
Halverson's first shot came at the 20:57 mark and was the initial attempt of the match for TCU, missing wide. The Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., product had her second blast also miss the mark in the 40th minute. Halverson claimed the Frogs' only two shot attempts in the first half.
Taylor got her shot on a free kick after a foul by Toledo in the opening minutes of the second half. Kviz kept the pressure on the Rockets' goalkeeper, blasting an attempt over the crossbar at the 53:38 mark.
The shutout was the second of the season for the TCU defensive unit, led by true freshman goalkeeper Alicen Wright and her five saves on 20 shots by Toledo. The Frogs' defense really buckled down in the final 22 minutes of the match, blocking three of the five attempts the Rockets released after taking the 1-0 lead on the goal by Calhoun.
"We did a good job keeping in them in front us," Abdalla said. "They are a good-sized team, but we were able to make our adjustments and make sure they didn't get too many good opportunities. When they did have a chance to score, Alicen kept us in the game with some great saves. We progressively got better as the game went on. We need to start playing better early in games, because when you play good teams like Toledo, you don't get too many second chances."
TCU will return to the pitch at John Walker Soccer Complex to take on Hofstra Sunday. The match is set to start at 10 a.m. ...
