FORT WORTH, Texas – In the final home match of their careers, seniors Guillermo Nuñez and Trevor Johnson propelled the No. 6 TCU men’s tennis team to its third-straight Big 12 Conference regular season title with a 4-1 victory over No. 23 Baylor on Thursday night at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

The Horned Frogs (17-3, 4-0 Big 12) captured their 11th straight victory and ninth over a ranked opponent this season on Thursday as the team became the fourth program to win three straight regular season titles in the conference. With the win by the Frogs and a loss by Texas tonight, TCU clinched the Big 12 title outright no matter the outcome of Sunday’s regular season finale at Texas Tech.

TCU came out strong in doubles as the No. 5 pair of Nuñez and Alex Rybakov were able to upend the No. 9 ranked pair of Will Little and Johannes Schretter, 6-1, on court one for their seventh win over a ranked foe this season. Johnson and Alastair Gray would clinch the early lead for the Frogs as the duo upset the No. 53 ranked pair of Constantin Frantzen and Akos Kotorman, 6-3, on court two for the pair’s seventh straight win and first over a ranked opponent.

The momentum carried into singles action with No. 91 Nuñez putting point No. 2 on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court three to increase his singles win streak to nine matches. No. 69 Johnson finished mere moments later with a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 79 Bjoern Petersen on court two for his fifth straight win of the season. No. 19 Rybakov and Reese Stalder were each serving for the match on their respective courts, with Rybakov coming out in front first with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court one over No. 64 Schretter for his 11th win over a ranked foe this season.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“This was a very special evening for all our guys, our program, our fans, our staff and our university. This class of seniors took our program into another level. I thought it was so fitting that it was coming down to the wire and our two seniors finish right next to each other and right back-to-back. They put us five minutes away from a victory and it was a very special moment for them and all of us and it was fitting for all that they have done for our program.

“To win the Big 12 is a huge accolade and something to be proud of. The fact that we have won it three years in a row is amazing and I never thought that it would happen. There are too many great teams and great coaches and too many good programs in this conference and somehow we have found a way to win it. Today is just about celebrating and celebrating the support we get from our university, our fans, our seniors that have done so much for this program and our championships. We are enjoying it because who knows when the next time is coming. There are too many good teams and coaches in this conference so tonight is all about celebration.”
