FWST: Rangers' desire for talent at value may mean passing on TCU's Purke

The financial mess that would handcuff the Texas Rangers for more than a year first came to light in July 2009, about a month after the club had selected prep star Matt Purke with its first pick in the First-Year Player Draft.

The pick, 14th overall, was made with the understanding between Nolan Ryan and the Purke camp that $6 million would be available to keep the left-hander from going to TCU.

That was before Major League Baseball started calling financial shots for owner Tom Hicks and would allow the Rangers to offer only $4 million as the deadline to sign the left-hander neared. ...
