FWST: Computer rating suggests disparity between TCU and Texas A&M poll rankings

Based on the Sagarin preseason college football ratings published today in USA Today, one of the nation’s most underrated teams in the inaugural coaches poll is TCU. And one of the most overrated is Texas A&M.

The Horned Frogs, who opened at No. 15 in the coaches poll, are No. 4 in the preseason Sagarin ratings based on a computer-generated ratings formula devised by mathematician Jeff Sagarin. A&M, the No. 9 team in the coaches poll, opened at No. 37 in the Sagarin ratings _ one of the largest disparities among teams ranked in the preseason coaches poll.

According to the Sagarin ratings, which assigns each team a power rating, the nation’s top team is Alabama (92.53 rating). The Crimson Tide opened at No. 2 in the coaches poll. The rest of the Sagarin top five includes Oregon (90.78), Ohio State (90.55), TCU (89.84) and Oklahoma (89.52). The Sooners claimed the top spot in the initial coaches poll, earning 42 of 59 available first-place votes. ...

Wow, a very silly article. The Sagarin pre-season ratings are biased and subjective. As such, it has little utility. And definitely not worth an article, unless the purpose is to pull down A&M and pimp UT (14th in the Sagarin pre-season joke).....

And the coaches' poll isn't?

All of it BS till the season begins and plays out a few weeks. Just something for some fans to brag about or defend for a month or so.

All true. But ranking A&M ranked higher than the Frogs in preseason polls is based on what logic? Andy Dalton must have been Superman the way his absence is affecting the polls. Funny. I don't remember his winning the O'Brien last year.

Bull[Craig James]. Although they should not come out for a few weeks, and although they are just beauty pageants, the pre-season polls are absolutely the most important of the season except for the last two weeks. If an AQ team isn't ranked, and if a non-AQ team isn't ranked highly enough, that team has no chance of playing for the MNC. The fact that the SEC has so many ranked all but guarantees that there will be an SEC team in the MNC game. Because they're all ranked, they're all playing a tough schedule, so they all must be good even if they lose, right? They do not play anyone worth anything in non-conference, so the only measuring stick we have for them is how they do against each other. Since the intelligensia has already decreed that it is a great conference, it will be deemed a great conference at the end of the season.

If MWC had 4 ranked trams, no one would talk about how the schedule is weak, but because the only way the non-AQ teams have to prove themselves is to play tough teams on the road, they will lose some and the prophesy that they are weak will be fulfilled. if BSU loses a close one to UGA, they're done from a MNC perspective, because they play no other anointed teams (even beating an undefeated TCU won't get them over the hump). On the other hand, if UGA loses a close game to BSU or one of the SEC teams, it still has a chance.

Just because you don't like it and just because there is no actual data behind it (no one has taken a game snap) doesn't mean that it's just the fans that care. The BCS bowls have already been filled by the teams in these rankings, it's just a matter of which team is in which game.

We've been in two BCS games and won the Rose Bowl. There's only one meaningful trophy we lack, and how much chance do we have of getting it this year? Almost none. 12 teams in front of us need to lose for us to get in the MNC, no matter how well we do. This is predestination at its worst. Just because it's stupid doesn't mean it's meaningless or we should ignore it, any more than you can ignore a big pile of poop in the middle of your living room just because you didn't lay it there. It still stinks.

And like the AP poll in not subjective and biased. Ha!

I am still mad at the Air Force coach for voting us down time after time last year. He made his vote public every week. He would always rank us 10 spots behind the average. He's a jerk and his linemen chop block, which is illegal.

He's a good coach, but he's a jerk. That happens very often. Not at TCU tho...
