If the Denver Post is to be believed, BYU may call a press conference before the end of business today to announce they're staying put...
BYU's discontent with its meager portion of a TV contract that it clearly is the sole breadwinner for is not about money.
It's about exposure.
That's the reason BYU plays the games. And the reason for BYU-TV. At a macro-level, it's the reason BYU exists because our graduates gives the Church the same thing on a more personal level. We "enter to learn and go forth to serve" in a world we believe to be our campus.
The most prudent option in my opinion is going independent temporarily. Staying independent may not work, unless BYU-TV proves grander than we think.
To me, the worst that could happen in going independent is it fails, but we'll know that in relatively short order. Then, we simply fold back into a conference - whether it's the Big One Plus 11 (Texas and everyone else) or heaven forbid, even back to the MWC.
BYU doesn't have the brand of Notre Dame but if ESPN is a partner, it ought to be able to schedule teams it already has a history with such as Miami, Florida State, Syracuse, Boston College, Penn State, USC, UCLA, the Oregons, in addition to the academies and the Irish.................
