Daily Oklahoman: Why a conference championship game is the easiest fix for Big 12's woes

When the Big 12 became a 10-school conference in 2011, the four-team College Football Playoff was only a gleam in every fan’s eye.
 
Back then, conference title games were seen as money-makers that rarely helped elevate a contender into the national championship game but absolutely could knock out a squad from said game. The Big 12 knew that well, having suffered through Kansas State’s loss to Texas A&M in 1998 and Missouri’s loss to OU in 2007. Both verdicts kept the Big 12 from having a representative in the Big Bowl.
 
But everything has changed. Most notably the self-image of the Big 12, which was shut out of the first four-team field. The other four major conferences will waltz on New Year’s Day in national semifinals, while the Big 12 licks its wounds and contemplates remedies.
 
The easiest fix is a championship game. Easily adaptable. Easily disposable, should it not work for any reason. But a championship game would offer an extra quality game for the Big 12’s national-title hopefuls, and in this new selection age of a small, sharp electorate (12-13 members) with a degree of accountability, résumés matter more than ever. ...
