MESA, Ariz. – Conroe graduate Andrew Cashner has earned the fifth spot in the Chicago Cubs’ rotation.

Used mostly as a reliever in his rookie year last season, the 2005 graduate of Conroe High School has been working for a spot in the rotation throughout spring training for Chicago.

“Organizationally, we just have to commit to finding out what ‘Cash’ could be,” Cubs manager Mike Quade said. “We’ve talked about it a little bit before, about making this commitment to him and seeing what he can do. I just don’t think you can cut a guy loose for four-five starts in Arizona — if you’re serious about this, and you think he has the potential to be a high end starter, which we do — and then go ‘Ah, never mind.’”

The Cubs’ No. 1 pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of TCU, Cashner was 2-6 with a 4.80 ERA in 53 relief appearances last year. ...
