Cal Golden Bears Hit the Road for a Tough Test in Fort Worth Against the TCU Horned Frogs

Cal takes to the road for the first time this season when the Golden Bears visit TCU Saturday. The game kicks off at 12:30 p.m. PT/2:30 p.m. CT from Amon G. Carter Stadium and will be televisted by ESPNU.
Under Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox, the Bears are 3-0 in regular-season, non-conference road games, with victories at North Carolina (35-35, 2017), BYU (21-18, 2018) and Ole Miss (28-20, 2019). Overall, Cal is 10-2 vs. non-conference opponents (9-1 regular season) under Wilcox.
Cal is also 12-5 in its past 17 road openers and had won six in a row before falling at UCLA last year. The six-game streak featured wins at BYU, North Carolina, Texas, Washington and Northwestern, plus a neutral-site victory vs. Hawai'i in Sydney, Australia.
Cal and TCU have met only once previously, with the Horned Frogs emerging with a 10-7 victory in overtime at the Cheez-It Bowl on Dec. 26,2018, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Cal Sports 2-0 Record at Amon G. Carter Stadium
While Cal is visiting TCU for the first time, the Bears are no stranger to Fort Worth and Amon G. Carter Stadium. Cal has twice played in the venue for the Armed Forces Bowl and come away a winner both times. In 2007, the Bears fell behind Air Force, 21-0, in the second quarter before roaring back for a 42-36 victory. Quarterback Kevin Riley was named MVP after connecting on 16-of-19 passes for 269 yards and three TDs, while running back Justin Forsett tallied 140 yards rushing. Then in 2015, quarterback Jared Goff led Cal to a 55-36 win over Air Force. Goff, also named the game's MVP, was 25-of-37 through the air for 467 yards and six touchdowns, setting a Cal bowl record and tying his career high for touchdowns in a game.
Success in Texas
In addition to Cal's 2-0 mark at the Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, the Bears have proved successful on other recent trip to the Lone Star State. In 2015, Cal edged Texas in Austin, 45-44, as part of a 5-0 start to the season behind quarterback Jared Goff. Prior to then, the Bears latest game in the state came in 1997 when Cal opened the year with a 35-3 win at Houston in the Astrodome. The Bears also prevailed in the inaugural Alamo Bowl in San Antonio when they downed Iowa, 37-3.
Honoring 9/11 Heroes Brent Woodall, Mark Bingham
This Saturday's game marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and the date Cal football lost one of its alumni. Brent Woodall, a tight end for the Bears who also was a member of the Cal baseball team as an undergraduate, was working as a stock trader on the 89th floor of the South Tower when the building was hit. He earned four letters in football (1988-91) and was a key member of the 1991 squad that finished ranked No. 8 in the nation after a 10-2 record and a Citrus Bowl victory over Clemson. He completed his career with 55 receptions for 646 yards and four touchdowns. Following his death, a Brent Woodall Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to support a scholarship for a Cal football player. TE Gavin Reinwald currently holds the scholarship.
The Cal Athletic family also lost one other former student-athlete on 9/11. Mark Bingham was a member of the 1991 national championship rugby team and a 1993 recipient of a bachelor's degree in social sciences with an emphasis in international relations. Bingham was on United Airlines flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania. In 2020, Cal rugby alumnus Stuart Shiff and his wife, Josie, created an endowment entitled the "Mark Bingham Rugby Back Row Endowment" in Bingham's honor. The Cal Alumni Association also annually presents the Mark Bingham Award for Excellence in Achievement by Young Alumni.
Texas Connection - 11 Student-Athletes Strong
Cal enters this week's game at TCU with a strong Texas presence, with 13 players hailing from the state. Six of the Bears come from the Dallas-Fort Worth area: CB Josh Drayden (DeSoto), CB Collin Gamble (Flower Mound), S Isaiah Humphries (Rowlett), WR J.Michael Sturdivant (Flower Mound), S Miles Williams (Mansfield) and S Craig Woodson (Grand Prairie). The other five from Texas are: OLB Marqez Bimage (Brenham), OLB Cameron Goode (Spring), CB Kaleb Higgins (Austin), OL McKade Mettauer (The Woodlands) and RB Ashton Sedrick (Needville).
