Abilene Reporter News: For ‘Mr. Cowboy' Bob Lilly, it all started in Throckmorton

By Sam Waller

Bob Lilly's list of football achievements is long, distinguished and well documented.

Widely regarded as one of the best defensive linemen to ever play the game, it's hard to argue with a resume that includes the following:

n Two-time all-Southwest Conference (1959-60) and consensus All-American (1960) selection at TCU, where he helped the Horned Frogs to a pair of SWC titles, two bowl appearances and two top-10 finishes.

n Becoming the first player drafted by the Dallas Cowboys as well as the first enshrined in the team's Ring of Honor and the first inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame to spend his entire career with the team.

n NFL Rookie of the Year honors, seven All-Pro seasons, 11 Pro Bowl selections and two Super Bowl appearances in a 14-year professional career.

But for Lilly, who will be inducted into the Big Country Sports Hall of Fame on Monday, none of it would have been possible without the upbringing he received in his hometown of Throckmorton.

Reading this story sort of puts things in perspective. Don't think some of the young guys can relate to how tough a lot of people had it during and before WW11.

Pete Stout had been recruited by Dutch as a qb, but had to go to the war like everybody else. He came back in 1946 with 3 years of eligibility left, as did Jim Lucas who had started for Frogs in 1943 and was a fine qb as well.

But freshman Lindy Berry beat everybody out of the job, and Stout was moved to fb, where he was great. I'm sure glad Bob Lilly got to see Pete and the others, and sounds like that helped him decide on TCU.
