I can't access the WaPo article, but these pieces in Goal.com lead me to believe even more that something was up between the families even before the WC began. I don't think Gio went there with a piss poor attitude unprepared to work and support the team. I don't care how young he is, everyone knows he's a world class teen with enormous potential and natural talent who should have a big impact on that stage. He knew it too. I think some things were going on between the family before Qatar and Gio had lost faith in GB and motivation to play for him. The comments by Gio's agent after the WC have led me to think this too. Something along the lines of GB speaking out of turn about the player who almost got sent home being self-serving and lacking a lot of context and other facts that would make the situation seem a lot different. But in a classy way, that statement from his agent suggested that there was no value in public in-fighting between members of the organization so the extent of the comment would stop there. I don't buy GB's explanation of how this was handled internally in Qatar either. He mentioned how he brought the leadership council in and told them what was going to happen. I'm thinking the bit about team holding him accountable organically without GB having to do it is contrived and designed to deflect culpability away from GB. I mentioned previously, but GB's handling of Gio and this situation really makes me wonder what else went into the Weston McKennie situation in Nashville that got him sent home. Clearly West has recovered from that incident and I'm certain Gio will recover from this one (both are young players learning life lessons), but the common denominator is Berhalter. I don't trust that the culture in the team was always as terrific as has been reported if stuff like this could be happening behind the scenes.
