After Chandler Morris’ transfer to University of North Texas, things are looking a lot clearer in the QB room. Josh Hoover leads the way after showing flashes last season while taking over for an injured Morris, but highly-touted recruit Hauss Hejny is now on campus and his arrival could put some pressure on Hoover.

Here’s a look at TCU’s QB room heading into 2024:

Key returners: Josh Hoover (Sophomore, 6-1, 196)
Key losses: Chandler Morris (Junior, 6-0, 190)
Newcomers: Hauss Hejny (Freshman, 5-10.5, 185)
Biggest unanswered question: Will Hejny have an opportunity to play?

Only if Hoover falters or gets injured.

Hoover, a Rockwall-Heath product, showed positive signs in his short run as the team’s starter in 2023. In his first start against BYU, he burst onto the scene and torched the Cougars to the tune of 439 yards passing and four touchdown passes in a 44-11 victory. Hoover can sling it, as he threw for more than 300 yards in five of his six starts.

The one aspect that hindered Hoover at times last season was ill-timed turnovers. Hoover was never afraid to try and make a tough throw, but this also got him into trouble. His two interceptions against Texas Tech in November proved to be too much for the Frogs to overcome. After the Texas Tech game, he made adjustments and avoided multi-interception outings going forward.

All signs point to Hoover being the starter this upcoming season. His performance on the field should determine whether or not he is the future for TCU going forward. If Hoover falters, look for Aledo alum and two-time UIL 5A state champion Hejny to get some opportunities this season.

Why 2024 production can be better:
After some experience under his belt last season and practicing with QB1 reps, Hoover should only get better. Stepping in for a QB midseason is tough, and now that he has a full offseason to learn the extent of Kendal Briles’ offense, he should vastly improve in 2024 and limit turnovers.

Why 2024 production can be worse: The one way that things would look worse for the Frogs would be if Hoover’s turnover issue persists. This could lead to a midseason quarterback controversy similar to last season’s and divide a locker room. Additionally, any injury to Hoover could derail this season for the Frogs and perhaps thrust Hejny into a starting role before he is ready.

Overall outlook: It will be interesting to see how things will play out, but as it stands right now, expect a full season of Hoover under center for the Frogs. Head coach Sonny Dykes and this locker room believe in him to the fullest extent with his leadership and gunslinging mentality. Expect a more polished look from the offense in 2024 with a more experienced Hoover, leading to an improved season and more wins for the Frogs.
