DMN: Can Horned Frogs make strides to win Big 12 games they’ve lost in recent seasons?

By Katherine G Griffith

Editor’s note: This is the fifth of a five-part series examining issues surrounding the 2021 TCU Horned Frogs.

TCU has finished in the bottom half of the Big 12 standings the past three seasons — sixth in 2020 — and there are teams the Horned Frogs are regularly losing to in the conference schedule.

One of those teams is Oklahoma. The Sooners have a seven-game win streak against the Frogs, and the last time TCU picked up a win in the series was 2014. Oklahoma, of course, has won the Big 12 the past six seasons as the powerhouse of the conference. The Sooners aren’t going anywhere, so Gary Patterson and the Frogs need to find a way to get a win, or at least compete against Lincoln Riley and his high-flying offenses. Oklahoma outscored TCU in the past three meetings 113-65.

The TCU coaching staff has been out coached against these teams each and every time and continue to be. With TCUs talent WVU, KSU, and ISU should be victories. TCU needs some offense with the defense. They give up the big play every time. OU game should be competitive but Riley has the easiest time against TCU like he is listening to the headset convo or knows each defensive call. He figures out Patterson quickly and TCU can't compete. That has to change this season.

this is not the year we’re going to compete with OU or ISU. ISU returns as many or more starters than us.

KSU and WVU should definitely be wins this year

Our offense is going to much better early on barring any misfortune during summer workouts. We should have beat ISU last season. The OL got going in the second half and they all return except one and have depth. Max will be in better shape and hopefully ready to go. OU is really the only team we are not really competitive with right now.

All we have is optimism right now. There's really nothing tangible we can point to as concrete reasons for why we will suddenly start winning these games that we've been losing. I guess beating OSU at the end of the year has to be looked at as a positive sign but there have been far more of those kinds of games going the other way the last 3 years unfortunately.

I'll be hopeful and optimistic but so many questions will remain unanswered until September especially with the offensive staff and their ability to develop and best utilize the talent on the roster.

Was I supposed to type something here?
Well, the one thing we will figure out is whether running Sonny off was a step in the right direction.

I believe the talent is there, we just haven't put the right pieces in the right places at the proper times. The possibility of proper timing, good execution, and perhaps even some confidence lies before us.

We almost beat ISU with our backup QB playing half the game last year. I know ISU returns a lot of starters but I think they are pretty much maxed out potential wise. We have a higher ceiling then they do. The question is can we get anywhere close to that ceiling. OU is another planet (but hey we gotta get lucky eventually right?). We have no business losing to KSU or WVU again.

As Randy Galloway would always say, "It's about the quarterback". Way too many misses along the way put us in mediocrity. Max didn't even get the benefit of a redshirt year because of our misses. Hopefully we are now headed in the right direction.

You almost can’t be optimistic about 2021 TCU Football without being a believer in the power of experience. The only real difference in 2021 and 2020 will be TCUs growth/development strides. The league/schedule teams are going to look very familiar from a personnel perspective so in theory we are going to have the same obstacles. I still think if we stay healthy we’re a 5-4 conference record type team. That projects to 7-8 wins in 2021...The wildcard is Max Duggan. He’s literally the only piece capable of causing this team to out kick 8 wins.

Simply put..Max version 2019 or 2020 isn’t good enough. He has to be better and elevate those around him

The thing about ISU is that their QB can be a game changer in both a positive and negative way. If he's playing well then they're really hard to beat but if he's doing a lot of stupid stuff then they can lose to almost anyone. And you know he's going to have 3 or 4 games where he's making huge mistakes and its just a matter of whether the opponent can take advantage of that.

What is going to be different about the offensive line?

If your offensive line is not coached well and performing well, your offense hurts. So what improvements can we honestly expect in 2021?

You will know the season is going well when Max is averaging less than 10 planned rushes per game. That means the ball, at last, is being successfully distributed to all the weapons on offense. That would be so much fun to watch after these last few years.

Also, if we are reducing planned runs for Duggan, it likely means when he does choose to run, it's much more open. And we know that if he gets 10 yards, pretty decent chance it's a TD as he has elite top end speed
