Oklahoma receivers show they can fill void for CeeDee Lamb

Cliff Brunt, AP Sports Writer

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Jalen Hurts entered his biggest game as Oklahoma’s quarterback without his security blanket.

Now, he’s even more secure.

CeeDee Lamb, a member of the Associated Press’ midseason All-America team, ranks in the nation’s top 10 in touchdown receptions, yards per reception and yards receiving per game. He was ruled out of last Saturday’s showdown with Baylor for undisclosed medical reasons. Oklahoma’s remaining pass catchers filled the void. Hurts completed 30 of 42 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns as the Sooners rallied from a 25-point deficit to top the Bears, 34-31.

I'm not sure it matters who the receivers are for OU vs the frogs. If Hurts has time, damage will ensue against the defense in one form or another. I don't recall the last time OU had a bad OL.

Texas and Baylor held them down to 34 points and our defense is certainly that good. Of course, But Baylor and Texas both have OK offenses, too. Defenses are more stressed when they have to hold down an offense well below their normal.

Against UT Hurts fumbled on the Texas 7 and threw an INT on the Texas 11. Total yards - OU 511 UT 310.
Against Baylor Hurts fumbled on the OU 47, threw an INT on the Baylor 36 and fumbled on the Baylor 4. Total yards - OU 527 Baylor 307

OU absolutely dominated both those games, Hurts just kept turning it over, typically in the red zone. At some point turning the ball over becomes less "random" and more careless (see S Robinson), but relying on getting critical turnovers isn't a great success plan.

It’s much more accurate to say OU held themselves to under 40 points in those two games.....Your assessment is spot on. People who are looking to OUs games against Bay and UT as reason to be hopeful are setting themselves up for disappointment. Turnovers are largely thought to be lucky and it was clearly OU’s carelessness that kept them from running up the score on all those teams.
