How’d Gary Patterson defend Kyler Murray and Tua Tagovailoa? We’ll find out

By Drew Davison

TCU coach Gary Patterson impressed as a TV analyst a year ago.

So it’s no surprise that ESPN is bringing back the longtime Frogs coach to serve on its “Coaches Film Room” telecast during Saturday’s Oklahoma-Alabama game in the Orange Bowl, one of College Football Playoff semifinals.

Patterson will be able to offer first-hand experience in how he went about trying to contain Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray this season. It’ll also be interesting to see what he says about slowing down Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, who finished runner-up in the Heisman race.

He defends Kyler Murray by allowing the OU o-line to open gaping holes for the RBs for 60 minutes

if you can slow the ou running game with your front and a couple of linebackers you stand a chance of slowing their offense.

murray does add the problem of being a very good runner and i am curious how this plays out between the ou offensive line and alabama defensive front.

Along the same line as how Bob Uecker used to deal with the knuckler as a catcher: He just waited until it stopped rolling, then picked it up....no problem.

Not many did this year
No they didn't. He threw for 308 and ran for 109 against Bama, OU had 471 total yards and 34 points. Against TCU he threw for 213 and ran for 51. OU had 536 total yards and 52 points. Significant difference in points but probably not in yards given that TCU's offense managed only a meager 275 yards and 20 points (7 of our points were on a kickoff return by Turpin) while Bama put up 528 yards and 45 points. TOP was 37:04 OU/22:56 TCU and 36:08 Bama/23:52 OU.

Bottom line is it's hard to play against that offense. It's really hard if you own offense is inept against their bad defense 3 times in a row.
