San Diego Union-Tribune: Does SDSU finally have speed to match TCU?

Written by Brent Schrotenboer

Two of the fastest football players at San Diego State once raced each other in the 100-meter dash.

It was April 2009. Leon McFadden finished fourth at 10.95 seconds, barely beating Ronnie Hillman (11.04) when both were among the fastest high school track stars at the Mt. SAC Relays.

More than two years later, there’s still some dispute about who is the Aztecs’ fastest player. Hillman, SDSU’s running back, said cornerback McFadden “won't race me again.” So it’s all arguable. If it’s not Hillman or McFadden, it might be sophomore receiver Colin Lockett, perhaps even sophomore safety Nat Berhe.

“I’d be willing to bet it’s Colin,” SDSU quarterback Ryan Lindley said last month.

The debate underscores an important part of SDSU’s improved football program. After years of sluggish play on offense and defense, SDSU has so many faster players now that it’s hard to tell which might be the quickest or most dangerous. As the saying goes, you can’t teach speed. But you can recruit it to join your team. And if you recruit enough of it, soon you can compete with the likes of Texas Christian, the reigning Mountain West champion.

On Saturday, SDSU (3-1) hosts TCU (3-2) in a 7:30 p.m. game at Qualcomm Stadium. ...

The two fastest players on the field will be wearing TCU uniforms. And it's worth noting that many people on here would be happier if both of them were wearing SDSU uniforms.

Obviously, SDSU has been watching tape. TCU doesn't have much speed this year.

We are actually faster than last year, McCoy is still a 4.3 guy, he is just too hesitant. Same goes for the safeties. Didn't lose that much speed. On O we are much faster. Kerley was not a blazer, neither was Young.
