FORT COLLINS -- Under Gary Patterson, TCU's football program has risen to national prominence, and they've done it in a style he knows best.
Defense.
His name is synonymous with the program he took over as the head coach 11 years ago, starting three years earlier as the defensive coordinator. In that time, the Horned Frogs have ranked first nationally in total defense five times (2000, 2002, 2008, 2009, 2010), a feat no other program in the nation can match since the statistic first came into use in 1937.
"We've been here 14 (years), and we've been doing it over 20, but it's one of those concepts where it was an eight-man front when it came to the front, we use a nickel package coverage concept as far as the coverage package and the blitz package," Patterson said. "I've just developed it sense then. Every year it's been tweaked." ...
