FORT WORTH – TCU has fortified its backcourt for years to come, signing Oregon State transfer Donovyn Hunter to its roster.

Hunter started 34 of 35 games at point guard in the Beavers' run to the Elite Eight in 2023-24. She was one of five players tabbed to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team and garnered honorable mention All-Defensive team accolades. Hunter, 6-0, averaged 6.8 points, 3.7 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game while logging a team-high 972 minutes.

Originally from Medford, Oregon, Hunter was graded the No. 82 overall recruit in the class of 2023 by ESPN HoopGurlz. She led South Medford High School to the OSAA Class 6A state championship game and earned state Co-Player of the Year honors her senior season.

Hunter became the first freshman to start at point guard for Oregon State since eventual WNBA first round draft pick Sydney Wiese in 2013-14. With Hunter running point, the Beavers increased their yearly win total by 14 games, topping only TCU (plus-13) for the national lead in year-over-year win improvement when including postseason play.

No first-year player took better care of the basketball. Hunter led all D1 freshman and ranked 21st nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.39). She had just five games with multiple giveaways.

Hunter is one of only two freshman in the last decade to get the Pac-12 All-Defensive team nod. She concluded her lone season in the Conference of Champions ranked second among all guards in field goal percentage (.416) and seventh overall in total assists (129).

She received Pac-12 Player of the Week recognition after guiding Oregon State to a home sweep of No. 3 Colorado and No. 16 Utah on Jan. 26-28. Her offensive prowess bloomed in the pair of top-20 takedowns, as she tallied 33 points and 14 assists. Hunter finished with a career-high 17 points on 7-9 shooting and 10 assists in a 91-66 victory over the Utes.

Hunter scored in double figures nine times, including the Beavers' final two games of the season in a Sweet 16 win over Notre Dame and narrow defeat to eventual national champion South Carolina. She finished with an equal number of games with five-or-more assists, six of which came during Pac-12 play or the NCAA Tournaments.

Injuries robbed Hunter of her first two high school seasons. Hunter rebounded by becoming a two-time OSAA Class 6A first team All-State player. She was selected as the MaxPreps Oregon Player of the Year in 2021-22 in her first full high school season. Hunter was then named Southwest Conference Player of the Year in 2023 after staking South Medford to a 23-7 overall record in its march to the state title game. Hunter averaged 24 points, five rebounds and five assists per game in her final season of prep ball.

She capped her high school career by taking home MVP honors at the annual WAVOR Basketball Showcase, leading the Oregon All-Stars to a 93-80 win over Washington via a 16-point, eight-rebound performance.

Hunter also competed on the AAU circuit for Cal Stars. She was honored as the 2023-24 Oregon AAU District Athlete of the Year following an Oregon State victory against Oregon on Dec. 31.

The sport is a family affair for Hunter. Her father, Sherman., and mother, Trisha, ran a basketball training facility in Medford.

TCU's 2024-25 roster now stands at 11 players with Hunter's addition. She joins backcourt mates Taylor Bigby, Madison Conner, Agnes Emma-Nnopu, Knisha Godfrey, Una Jovanovic, Maddie Scherr and Hailey Van Lith as well as posts Sedona Prince, Aaliyah Roberson and DaiJa Turner.
