GoFrogs: Pinnington Rolls Into Third Round of ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. – Jack Pinnington's potential is emitting in full across the national tennis landscape.

The former British ITF juniors No. 1 cruised to his fifth fall invitational victory and into the third round of the ITA All-American Championships main singles draw on Thursday.

Pinnington, the No. 26 ITA singles player, swept Illinois' Kenta Miyoshi, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 32.

He boosted his fall singles record to 5-2 with the performance. Of Pinnington's victories, four have come in straight sets while three have been at the expense of ranked opponents. Pinnington first put the nation on notice by advancing to the semifinals of the Battle in the Bay Classic in September.

Pinnington will meet No. 87 Jay Friend of Arizona at 10 a.m. CT on Friday in the third round. Should Pinnington win, he'll face either No. 1 Eliot Spizziri of Texas or Columbia's 15th-ranked Michael Zhang in the quarterfinals around 1:30 p.m.

The junior is the second Horned Frog in as many years to advance to the round of 16 of the ITA All-American Championships. Five-time All-American Luc Fomba played his way into the quarterfinals of the 2022 edition of the national event.

Pinnington can become TCU's first-ever ITA All-American singles champion or runner-up in its decorated history.

His triumph was the first of two Horned Frog victories. Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted downed East Tennessee State's Dimitri Badra and Francisco Lamas, 6-3, 7-5 in the consolation doubles round of 16.

Chan and Maxted, ranked No. 38 nationally, have notched three wins in Tulsa. The tandem, playing for the first time together this tournament, earned a wild card berth onto the main doubles draw on the strength of two qualifying victories. Chan and Maxted gave the 10th-ranked team of Michal Heller and Andrew Zhang of Duke all it could handle in the opening round of the main draw on Wednesday. They narrowly fell to the graduate student duo, 6-4, 3-6, [10-6].

Sebastian Gorzny proved himself a perennial contender in national championship events even in defeat on Thursday. The sophomore dropped a three-set battle to No. 24 Etienne Donnet of Louisville, 7-6 [8-6], 6-3, 6-2. Gorzny's grit was on full display. The national No. 43 knotted set one at five games apiece afer falling behind 1-5. He trailed 4-1 in the tiebreaker but knotted the action at 6-6 before winning on ad deuce.

Gorzny and Vives saw their run in doubles come to a halt, as the No. 13-ranked pair fell to Wake Forest's DK Suresh and Holden Koons 6-3, 6-3.

TCU commands a 12-5 combined overall record with three days remaining in the tournament.

Chan and Maxted draw Daniel Milavsky and Cooper Williams of Harvard around 2:30 p.m. on Friday in the consolation quarterfinals.

Maxted has reeled in a team-leading eight fall victories this fall, swelling his career record in purple and white to 69-29. He leads TCU in doubles wins with a 43-17 mark.

Chan and Pinnington have reeled in seven fall wins apiece.
