Notes On A Scorecard

TCU director of intercollegiate athletics Chris Del Conte discusses the hot topics around the Horned Frogs

STATE FARM DFW DUEL – BATTLE FOR THE IRON SKILLET
I’ve received a lot of emails and phone calls after our opening two home football games. The feedback is extremely valuable. We always appreciate hearing the good and bad, even as we play in a live construction site for one year. Several of your recommendations have already been implemented or are on tap for this Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. game with SMU. For example, last week we began a shuttle service to assist fans with tickets on the west side’s 200 level. For everyone planning on attending this Saturday's State Farm DFW Duel – Battle for the Iron Skillet, please make sure to arrive early and stay hydrated. It is very important to have you in your seats by 2:30.

GAME WEEK GUIDE
For the latest on our home football game-day activities, please see our new on-line game-week guide by clicking HERE. It includes updated promotions, what's happening in Frog Alley and key information regarding directions, shuttle services, available parking, merchandise and tailgating policies and procedures.

SELECTION WEEK APPROACHING
If you made a deposit on club seats, you should have received an item in the mail about our Club Seat Selection Week the week of Oct. 10-14. Please contact our Frog Club office at (817) 257-7700 if this has not made its way to you yet.

THE CENTURY MARK
Congratulations to Gary Patterson on his 100th head coaching victory in our recent win over Louisiana-Monroe. Did you know he’s one of just nine active head coaches to have won 100 games at their current school? We’ve said it many times and truly believe that we have the best football coach in the country. Next on Coach Patterson’s milestone chart is the legendary Dutch Meyer and his TCU record 110 wins.

HITTING THE LINKS
Our 2011 Horned Frog Classic is rapidly approaching. Please mark your calendar for Monday, Oct. 17, at Colonial. Just give the TCU Frog Club Office a call at (817) 257-7700 for more details.

LET’S TALK HOOPS
Season-ticket renewals for men’s and women’s basketball were mailed with an Oct. 24 deadline. Single-game tickets will be available beginning Nov. 1. To guarantee your seats for next year’s debut campaign in the BIG EAST Conference, make sure to purchase your season tickets this year. Season seats for our women’s games are just $100. If you make that purchase, you’ll have the same price for next year.

FALL SUCCESS
In addition to our football program being in the top 25 for a 46th consecutive week, the nation’s third-longest active streak, our other fall sports have had successful starts to their seasons. Volleyball is 14-1 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain West. We have a couple more road matches this weekend before our next home contest a week from tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 6, versus San Diego State at 7 p.m. Our soccer program is 6-4-1. We have home matches at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium next Friday and Sunday nights, Oct. 7 and Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. versus San Diego State and Texas Tech, respectively.

COMPLIANCE CORNER
This week’s compliance reminder is about practice time limitations. It is important to understand the rationale behind the rule, how practice time is documented (the CARA Form) and the basic rules involved. Rationale for Practice Rules: The purpose of these rules is to ensure that student-athletes are not subjected to unreasonable time demands made by the athletic staff and that student-athletes have adequate time to devote to academics. At TCU, we CARA (Countable Athletically Related Activity)! The CARA Form serves as documentation that NCAA practice limits have been followed. CARA Forms are completed by a team’s head coach and signed by a designated team member who verifies that practice time has been correctly reported. CARA forms are turned in to TCU’s Compliance Office monthly, without exception! The basic practice time rules are: During the playing season (period from date of initial practice through date of final competition – bowl game or NCAA championship), practice may be required for no more than 4 hours per day, 20 hours per week and 6 days per week. Outside of the playing season, only 8 hours of conditioning per week may be required. An exception for football allows 15 practice sessions during a 1-month period in the Spring. No class time may be missed for practice activities except those associated with an away contest. Any competition counts as 3 hours regardless of actual duration. Practice may not be conducted at any time following competition except between contests, rounds or events during a multi-event competition.
