A way-too-early look at TCU’s 2024 football schedule

Ethan Love

The TCU Horned Frogs have a similar looking football schedule to previous years. But with the additions of Arizona, Arizona State, Utah and Colorado in the Big 12, TCU finds itself playing two of these new opponents.

Here’s a way-too-early breakdown of the Frogs’ schedule for the 2024 season.

2024 Schedule

Aug. 30 — at Stanford
Sept. 7 — vs. LIU (Long Island)
Sept. 14 — vs. UCF
Sept. 24 — at SMU
Sept. 28 — vs. Kansas
Oct. 4 — vs. Houston
Oct. 19 — at Utah
Oct. 26 — vs. Texas Tech
Nov. 2 — at Baylor
Nov. 9 — vs. Oklahoma State
Nov. 23 — vs. Arizona
Nov. 30 — at Cincinnati

Biggest non-conference game: at Stanford, Aug. 30

It is easy to say that the classic Iron Skillet game against SMU will be the biggest non-conference game for the Frogs, but the opener at Stanford is much more important. Last season, TCU got things started against then Pac-12 team Colorado and lost. The loss came unexpected to many and set the season off on a bad tone. The Frogs let that opening loss unravel into an unsuccessful season. Starting the season with a win, especially on the road, would be huge for TCU. It would set the tone for the team as it tries to have a bounce-back season.

Game TCU shouldn’t win, but might: vs. Oklahoma State, Nov. 9

Head coach Mike Gundy always has the Oklahoma State Cowboys ready to play. This past season was no exception. With key returners like Alan Bowman and star running back Ollie Gordon, the Cowboys look to be near the top of the Big 12 once again. It will be a tough game for TCU, but this is a game that could potentially have upset written all over it. The Pokes are a great team, but they are one dimensional in how they can win. Their blueprint is to play through Gordon and if they can establish their running game with him, they are hard to beat. If the Frogs can stop Gordon in the trenches and force Bowman to make plays, TCU has a great chance to upset Oklahoma State. This is exactly what Texas did in the Big 12 Championship. The game is also being played at home, another advantage for the Frogs. Don’t be surprised if TCU pulls off the upset in early November.

Game TCU should win, but might not: at Baylor, Nov. 2

After a down year, Baylor still looks to be pedestrian this upcoming season. The games between TCU and its biggest conference rival never fail to be close. In recent memory, Chandler Morris had a monster game against Baylor at home in 2021, beating the Bears in upset fashion and deflating their College Football Playoff hopes in the process. Just the following year, Baylor came ever so close to returning the favor, but a last second field goal from Griffin Kell gave the Frogs the win in Waco on their way to the national championship game. These games have proven to be unpredictable and both teams rose to the occasion against one another because the rivalry is that deep. On paper, the Frogs should win this game, but don’t be surprised if Baylor takes revenge for the last three seasons at home this upcoming year.

Offensive line and kicking game are the big “?” If we can get those solidified, we could be scary good.

If Offensive line plays slightly better than last year, we’ll probably flip a couple of games to the “w” column.

Defense sounds fast and violent so far.

My prediction is we will win more than 7 and it’s not outside of the realm of possibility to be in the chase for conference championship.

I expect the defense to be much improved and the offense to be pretty good between the 20s and be average again in the red zone.
