Head Coach Tracy Cleays was fired not because of what his players did, but for his comments after the incident. His comments were outrageous and he deserved termination for what he said and did. Ten of his players were accused of sexual assault and subsequently suspended by the school. The victim was a 17 year old girl and a football recruit was encouraged by the ten current players to assault her in the midst of wild cheering by the 10 players, as the ten players then got involved and participated in the sordid event. This occurred in the very recent aftermath of the horrible Baylor scandal, yet Coach Cleays had learned nothing from Baylor Coach Briles' despicable behavior towards victims.
Once the 10 players had been suspended for sexually assaulting another female student, their teammates foolishly boycotted their upcoming Bowl Game in an assinine attempt at showing support for teammates (accused sexual predators). Nearly all the players on the team then went into an aggressive "victim shaming" campaign that was ultimately somewhat successful as they attempted to get the victim to recant her story (ala Briles and Baylor). Shamefully, some of the players were actually successful because the very young victim disappeared, was humiliated at school and received hate mail, dropped out of school, and declined to testify in order to avoid further humiliation. Charges were then dropped by law enforcement, but the sexual assault was confirmed to have happened by the police dept and further civil lawsuits will be filed.
As soon as the alleged rape accusations were made, and the disgusting behavior of the 10 players was confirmed by the police dept, the 10 players were immediately suspended by Univ of Minnesota. That is when the other players on the team foolishly and with incredible stupidity, decided to attack the victim and support their teammates. Head Coach Cleays, instead of acting as a mature, sensible, and responsible adult leader, then joined the idiots and he stated publicly on all 3 local TV channels that he was supporting his players and not the victim, which was a nauseating statement to make in the opinion of the general public in that area. The Coach then doubled down on his idiotic and irresponsible stance and then tried to bully the administration of the Univ by threatening them, and also refusing to change his stance and demonstrate compassion for the victim, which he then refused to do. Many people in the area then wrote to the Athletic Director saying they would never attend another UM game as long as he was the Coach.
Here is the actual news clipping about his firing.
(Quote by Coach Cleays on all 3 TV channels and the national news, after it had been revealed that a 17 year old girl had been sexually assaulted by a football recruit and 10 of his current Minnesota players in a mob sexual assault situation of some kind) ---
"I Have never been more proud of our kids in this incident. I respect their rights (and) support their effort to make this a better world!"
WHAT ?? You have "never been more proud of the kids who abused a young 17 yr old girl in public ? Seriously ? You...Coach Cleays.....are a bona fide Jackassss.
That stance seemed to clash with the administration, particularly Coyle and President Eric Kaler, who were determined to respond decisively to allegations that had upset the community, however Coach Cleays refused to back down from his stance.
Coyle said Tuesday the tweet "was not helpful. I accept that Coach Claeys intended it to support the boycotting players. Understandably others did not see it that way."
"How can someone in a leadership position, make such an idiotic statement," stated a local viewer and longtime Minnesota fan.
Additionally damaging to Claeys and the program, it was revealed shortly after, that a 17-year-old recruit was alleged to have had sex with the woman that night in some sort of ritual event that the 10 players cheered on. All of the accused players told investigators the sex was consensual, and Hennepin County authorities twice chose not to file charges because witnesses won't come forward and oppose the football team due to potential threats, so the police said they had no choice but to reluctantly drop criminal charges due to insufficient evidence.
But the university's investigation by the Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action office has a lower threshold for proof than the criminal justice system, and the report leaked to television station KSTP said school investigators found the woman's account of the night to be more far more credible than the accounts given by the players, who are highly suspected of lying en masse in their attempt to cover up the incident.
Good!
Darn the Gophers!
I hope they lose every game this fall.
Unforgivable for blaming the coaches for the team reacting to a perceived public lynching of their teammates by authorities just prior to a bowl game.
