If you're referring to the Byrne play, the ball (which wasn't deeply hit) wasn't wasn't from the outfield to home. It was from shallow right to the infield just about the time Byrne reached 3rd. Had he tried for home, it was a not a diificult throw from infield to catcher.

His throw was 6 feet up the line. Frogs would have scored. If we had a good average hitting with runners in scoring position with 0 or 1 or 2 outs I could see holding him. You can almost flip a coin on 75% our lineup at the plate in that situation on whether it will be a strikeout or a pop out.
