Texas State Senators Ripped Into A Stammering Baylor Interim President

Great article. Deadspin has been pounding Baylor from the beginning of all this and calling them out for what they are.

One of the things that has really bugged me about a lot of the other media coverage on this scandal is that they have presented Baylor as doing all of this to protect their big-time, highly successful football program (assuming you consider the Russell Athletic Bowl to be the pinnacle of college football). What they fail to understand about Baylor is that, at the end of the day, it doesn't truly even care about having a big-time football program or one that is truly successful. All they really, truly, despatately care about is that they seem to be among the elite and that people think that they have a big-time, highly successful football program.

From the design of their stadium (made to look far bigger than it actually is), to their practice field bowl banners, to their falsified bowl rings, to the university itself (made to seem far more selective than it actually is, on far surer financial footing than it is, and with people made to seem far more righteous than they actually are). Baylor doesn't care about who they are - they only care about how they're perceived. It's all a facade. And they cling to that facade and are willing to do anything to preserve it, no matter what - even if it means wrecking 52 young lives along the way.

Baylor wasn't protecting their program. They were protecting their image. They so desperately wanted to be seen as being one of the big boys (in every possible respect) that they were willing to take any shortcut or tell any lie or cover-up any sin to get there and stay there.
