Wonder how Randy Shannon feels about being the linebackers coach at TCU.

He came into a situation where we ran the 4-2-5, responsible for the play of 2 linebackers.

Now, with the 4-1-6 coming into play, in those situations he is responsible for the play of only 1 linebacker.

Now, I'm not sure that the 4-1-6 is ever going to be our true bread-and-butter defense, but it made me ponder what Coach Shannon might think of his responsibilities/workload! hmy:

Of course, in a 4-1-6, it is possible that one of the defensive backs is a de facto linebacker, and would therefore fall under his coaching domain. I'll defer to folks here who are more knowledgeable than I.

I'm sure his scope of influence is well beyond the linebackers. This guy was at one time considered the best defensive mind in the country.

Probably, and more input into the "switch coverages" of dropping a Defensive End into LB position and blitzing from the LB or Strong Safety spot. Lots of options!

Therefore, lots of headaches for the opponents OL.

Maybe that isn't quite to the "thought" level yet. . . . I'd bet that HCGP has plenty for Shannon to handle and that Shannon contributes to the defensive coaching and planning way beyond just linebackers. Unless Shannon has complained about "losing status" as the season has evolved, this is a pot that doesn't need stirring.

This. You don't bring in/expect Randy Shannon to coach two linebackers and stay out of everything else.

Between Patterson, Mustache, Shannon, Glasgow and the other guy, we have a defensive staff that probably works on everything together to come up with defensive gameplans. It is just a remarkable staff that is viewed on the same level as Bama's defensive staff.

Mallett's improvement is in large part to Shannon's coaching. We also have some players that are tweeners (LB/S) so it shouldn't be that big of a shock to see people like Jordan Moore practicing with the LBs or Anderson or Carter for that matter. Sometimes it is simply about getting the best players you can on the field. UT is actually implementing a similar strategy this year as well with some of their LB issues.

He's probably the next DC ... taking a big D coordinating load off GP. Mustasche has never really been anything more than Assist DC after his 1st dismal first season in charge of the D. So if Randy would be happy with that in 2013 or 14, sure it's his... and then over the next 10 years, he should be the man... unless he wants a HC job before then.
