Why do you guys get so wrapped up in recruiting?

How many times has Texas or Texas A&M "outrecruited" a majority of the country and had lousy seasons to follow?

USC's #1 recruiting class sure showed the rest of the nation this year, right?

What were the star rankings or ESPNU150 rankings of our previous players such as Andy Dalton, Daryl Washington, and Jerry Hughes?

Remember when SMU and North Texas were giving us a hard time after signing day in 2008, saying they had better classes than we did? What were are final AP rankings in 2008, 2009 and 2010?

How many times has Baylor given us [Craig James] for having better classes than us? How many seasons has Baylor outperformed us in the past 15 years?

Moral of the story: Recruiting and the Rivals culture is the most over rated aspect of college sports. Raw talent can not win games. Only coaching ability and making the most out of what a player has wins games. Plus who gives a crap about rivals rankings anyway when their player grades are based on who is recruiting a player rather than actual ability?

You can love the current players you have and still want quality top prospects that fit the GMFP mold. We havent got many of those this year but many expect that to change. Maybe it takes a awhile but imagine if we can start getting instant difference makers like Devonte Fields every year in bunches of 5 or 6. Not raw great projects.

An awesome 2013 sure would help that cause, especially with a LSU win :D

Man, I wonder why those schools have (mostly) done so well the past couple of seasons. It surely cannot be because they recruited well...

Obviously Patterson and staff had Manning at the top of their list, and have been recruiting him since February at least. Being highly rated by Rivals is a plus, but when the staff pulls out all the stops to land a player the fans should want him on campus as well. Our program still has a significant amount of room to improve before Patterson and Co. gets all the players who are at the top of their list.

Considering what your saying when was the last time we had a commit for the following year before this years recruiting was over? http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/169702/emanuel-porter
This year has some soon to be great players! True not all will make it but have we ever had a recruiting class with all players making it to the end? Next year is out bust out year for highly recruited players in my opinion. But that's me! Can't wait for the bowl then next season! Can we skip spring? :tongue:

I certainly don't wrap my life around every decision some 17 or 18 year old recruit makes but obtaining talented players does matter and to argue otherwise is just not facing reality. Yes, some recruits like Tank, Dalton, etc... turn out to be more talented than they were projected by some recruiting services but nonetheless, they had talent. It wasn't like they did it with smoke and mirrors.

You give Patterson, Saban, Miles, Kelly, et al, UNLV talent it may be likely that those coaches get more out of them than their current coaches, but at the end of the day they're still UNLV. They are not TCU, Alabama, LSU or Oregon.

Cannon was a huge prospect, one of our very first 4-stars, like Kerley. Pretty sure Chucky Hunter and Catalon were 4 star guys too but I could be wrong.

Cannon was a large man, but not a bigtime prospect. 3 Star with a mediocre list of offers, IIRC. Chucky Hunter was a 4-Star, but Catalon was not. Waymon James and Pachall were 4-Stars though, and very highly recruited. Tanner Brock was as close to being a 4-Star as you can be, and was also very highly sought after.

I follow recruiting because it's fun to watch it all unfold and it gives you a closer attachment to the team. You followed these guys in HS and know their back story, so it makes the games more fun.

I used to get all caught up in landing individual guys, but I quit worrying about it very much. Now I just sit back and see who we get, because it's fun and interesting.

I blame the teachers. When you are little, you sometimes get stars on your paper if you do a good job. Those little fellers grow up longing for stars to make them feel secure and proud like they did when they were 5 or 6. Obviously, this is the attraction to following recruiting. Unmet needs.

Catalon was super close to a being a 4 star rating too. #3 back in texas

Rated a 5.7 by rivals. 5.8 is the minimum for 4 star. Do you know how that rating system works? Seems a bit convoluted. Guess it doesn't matter since the talent left for scout.
