Who had a better coaching year - Briles or Patterson?

CFN thinks Briles did. http://cfn.scout.com/2/557654.html

And I am sure Baylor fans think so too.

But I disagree that Art Briles had a better coaching year.

I know he had to replace a Heisman winner, but the guy who replaced him had plenty of experience and the rest of the team was still pretty experienced, ranking 28th nationally in effective experience: http://www.cfbsheets.com/2012/Baylor.html - So the team was still pretty much in tact from last year

Gary Patterson, on the other hand. We all know the story here, offseason, injuries, having to resort to a former walk on running back at starting middle line backer and so on. We ranked 121st nationally in effective experience: http://www.cfbsheets.com/2012/TCU.html

Both Briles and Patterson had the same records, both overall and in conference. But the big difference is that Patterson beat Briles by 28 points in Briles' building, so that should be the tie breaker in who had the better year of coaching.

It's close. Depends how you define coaching year. If you include keeping players eligible and on the team as part of coaching then Briles had the much better year. If you only count getting the most out of the players you have between the sidelines then GMFP had the better year. Personally, I wouldn't criticize what either one accomplished this season.

Given that BU's best win came against a team TCU had just beaten up and given that every B12 team lost the week after playing TCU, I have to take away a lot of the credit for BU's defensive performance vs KSU.

Again, it is not mere accident that every B12 team lost the week after playing TCU. TCU beats up other teams. LHCGP also provides a scheme to use against the team.

It is not as though BU suddenly learned how to play defense. They just copied what TCU had done. If TCU had any offense......
