Where was our Defense?

The offense gave us a field goal to take the lead with 4-5 minutes left.
Our defense did a Utah and let them win the game at the end. Why is no one talking about this?
If our mantra is win by one point, our defense is supposed to stop them when the game is ours.
No pressure on an inexperienced QB from our "great DE's and no stopping Bell. The D needs to finish the game.
I had flashbacks of Utah while some of you will say it was Boykins fault or Dawson's fumble. But we took the lead late and the
strength of this team was exployed by one of the weakest offenses in the nation. If the "D"is not going to hold up at the end
in big games we need to change our mantra to something else as the mantra defines who we are or espire to be. The stage was
perfectly set to win the way Coach P likes to win and it did not happen.

No way can you put this on the D, they played great. If anything they were gassed because our offense couldn't stay on the field in the 2nd half

See my post. The D was great last night with the exception of one series. Can't speak to the defensive hold on that series, but even with it, it wasn't like MSU was taking a chip shot from the red zone to score the go ahead FG. How many times do you expect the defense to force 3 and outs when our offense isn't executing passes or catches?

Yup, the D was fine. In fact, all things considered they played very well (except for the dropped interceptions - concentration problem from youth?).

How many yards did they surrender?

Even with a free first down via defensive holding, the Defense held them to a 47 yard field goal try. That's plenty good enough for me, kid just happened to make the kick. Good for him, bad for us.

As an MSU fan, I thought your D was outstanding. I know as an offense MSU is really challenged, even still our D was rated #4 or 5 in the country while your is also top 10 you outplayed MSU's D. We both lost games by very slim margins (MSU lost 5 games by 13 points, and I know you have similar numbers). Your young and yet strong on that side of the ball, just recruit another Slingin Sammy and next year you;ll be BCS Bound. Thanks for a terrific game and sadly I must say, The best team did not win on Dec 29. Good Luck next year

Offense failed to execute and couldn't sustain drives. Defense got tired... Didn't have much to do with youth. They were just on the field too much in the second half

Thanks, I enjoyed watching the chess match against the slimmer Bell. Good luck next season.

Asking the D to play on that level for what seemed like 45min of the game isn't realistic either. Especially against a power running game.

Most of teams we beat had horrible defenses (WVU, Baylor, Texas, Kansas) where we could win TOP, I don't know how last night played out as far as TOP but DL was gassed at the end.

Lose turnover battle = lose game

The offense didn't do anything, the defense got gassed from playing nearly the entire second half. Comparing to Utah in 08 is a good analogy. Just like in those days when Schultz's offense would leave the defense on the field all day, we lost a game we should not have.

They played well until they had a chance to put the game way. Our defense is very good but great defenses make the big stop when Called upon. I agree with the OP.

Even the best defenses in the world struggle to keep an opponent from scoring when given the ball on the 4 yard line.

The defense gave up 10 points pretty much... MSU was gifted the ball at the 5.

If your defense gives up 10 you should win 99% of the time if you think you are a respectable team.
