Where was Mallett?

Really more curious than anything else. Admittedly I didn't follow the Bowl hype and news as closely this year as in previous but I hadn't heard anything and he didn't show up at all in the stat sheet even for an assisted tackle. Anyone know the reason for his absence?

Also curious as to why we go back to the 4-2-5 with Hasley covering receivers on 3rd and long. What happened to the brilliant 4-1-6? Pride is killing our coaching mentality. (yes, I realize they are still the best in the country)

Okay. I get the point behind the question but I just want to know why Mallett didn't play or was he even there?

Dime pkg is for passing offenses. MSU formations were mostly run. What was lacking was the inside-out pursuit of the LB's. DT's force Bell sideways and our CB's and WS were being forced to tackle. JB was left in single coverage with a frosh CB, but offense was not using audibles. QB missed open receivers, dropped passes and int's. ST's had their problems covering and on returns too, OL seem to miss several assignments and a blown coverage on the trick play in secondary. Loss was a collective effort. Really wished an upperclassman had stepped up leadership with play.

Mallett played on kick coverage.

Against Michigan State you have to defend the run first and that is Hasley's forte.

Thank you. Glad to know that he did at least see the field. I agree that Hasley's forte is stopping the run and hoped that's why he was playing as much as he did. That said, it's not like MSU was using a hurry-up offense that prevented substitutions. Were we not willing to play situationally? Hasley did make 8 tackles (2 solo and 6 assisted). I just found the "participation" stat lines and Mallett is clearly listed.

Hasley was the player who let Bell get by him for their touchdown catch and then missed the tackle. If I remember right, his poor pass defense was the reason Patterson played Hasley less and replaced him with Mallet earlier in the season. Hasley is too slow on pass coverage.

I know what you mean but this part is simply not true. If it had been Bell, Hasley would have had less of an issue covering him IMO. But then again, Bell would likely not have been asked to run a crossing route from a flanked position. It wasn't Bell. As for the missed tackle, I didn't see it like others must have. I saw a desperate leap for legs that were quickly distancing themselves. Might still be considered a "miss" by some. I consider it an effort with minimal chance of success. All that said, I still wonder why Mallett wasn't in there on those 3rd and distances (3rd and 9 in this case) or as another poster suggested -- the 4-1-6.

He played on special teamsl. Seems when people don't play like this, an issue with preparation and practice on game week.
