What if TCU had hidden the news for two weeks....?

OK, Te'o found out about the "hoax" December 6, still talked about his girlfriend to reporters the next week, finally told the Notre Dame people about the "hoax" December 26. Notre Dame immediately comes out with the story and faces the results. Right? Wrong. Notre Dame hides, i.e. sits on, the news until January 15 only acknowledgingg it after the story comes out nationally. Why? They wanted to let Te'o's family reveal it in their own time. Would Notre Dame (Notyer Dame) ever have revealed it? Compare that with the way the TCU AD dealt with a certain issue that came up last fall. Wait until the individual's family revealed it? Not quite. So far the press is giving Notre Dame a pass on this, but wonder how long that will last.

Anybody else think this has been blown way out of proportion. Is this really the biggest thing to get upset over in the nation or even in college football right now?

I'm with you. Some people seem outraged over this. I just find it really weird/odd.

ESPN starting to wondering ND was complicit in this.

Prior to the BCS Championship Game, this guy was talked about as a top 10 pick. His play in that game, plus this crazy story can't be helping his stock. He's either unethical, unstable, or delusional. Not sure you want to build a franchise around that guy.

Or just too trusting which appears to be the case.

Feisty, I can see your point but I think it's a big deal because it exposes the corruption of the media. If you saw how this is being covered in Hawaii, you'd know what I mean. They're just running with it as "Te'o the victim of internet fraud". The press didn't do its job. The new media had to uncover the story, which was such an obvious fraud that any of us could have figured it out had we made the effort. Now, the local media here are just running with the latest version of Te'o's story, even though his story makes no sense. Media corruption is the real story and that's why it's a big deal.

It's usually not the crime, but the "cover up" that gets people in the most trouble.

Is it really the media's responsibility to trace every story, especially from college football players?

Basically this is just typical overreaction, which is what they did with the original story. We got something and we will play it out as long as we can....

Yes, it is if they're going to lead with it for almost an entire season and make it the cover story of major magazines. If they only did this with sports stories it wouldn't bother me so much. However, this is what they do with hard news as well. We simply can't trust our news sources any longer.

I agree with you. It's a case of the press being furious because the press got embarrassed for not doing their jobs the 1st time around. Now they're demanding Te'o hold a press conference so that they can be spoon fed another story.

I never thought the original dead gf story was that big of a deal either. I remember thinking aww that sucks and good for him when he played well against MSU the next day. But to me a dead gf ranks somewhere around my dog died. A girlfriend isn't exactly at spousal, parental, or sibling levels.

It's not needed for them to investigate every aspect of every story. But they do need to do that when they commit 3 months and 10,000+ hours of coverage to gang banging the original Te'o story to death. How hard is it to check for an obituary and go from there?

Sadly, if US Weekly was covering this, they would've unraveled the Te'o hoax within a week. Unfortunately our legitimate journalists generally can't be bothered.

I'm still wondering how Notre Dame is getting off so easily with the story, having known about it and hidden it from view for nearly three weeks.

Feisty - Too trusting? He claimed to have loved this girl, but he never met her, never saw her, never visited her even though he knew she was sick and maybe dying. They never Skyped, never used FaceTime or any other streaming service. How can that possibly all be true if he loved this girl as he claimed?

Something fishy is up.

I don't think it's a big deal, really. I don't care if Te'o invented a whole fake family and cooked them food and had tea time. But it's the total debunking of a very high-profile college player's legend. Would he be where he is today without it?

He's gay. He'll come out after the draft.

He is a devout mormon at a conservative catholic university. He had much to lose by coming out as an undergrad.. At least in terms of possible unfair treatment by those in charge (not so much in terms of draft position).

You mean to tell me a handsome starting LB icon fom Hawaii couldn't find one datable girl? This was a coverup, an in my opinion it's a shame he had to cover it up.

If you are buying the story that he wasn't in on it, then he's not only too trusting but mostly a complete total freaking idiot. Just too many holes in the story.

No way he is not part of it. Also, wasn't there some fund set up for the girlfriend to collect money to help the family or somehting? Thought there was and if so, could be some smoke there.
