What I don't understand about NIU?

How the hell did then sneak in and we weren't able to last year?

Does having the extra game, ala conference Championship game really help that much in computers and rankings. Perhaps we should have called Tech and begged them to play us last year. If they won they could have gotten a bowl game and if we won we could have gone to the Sugar.

And NIU did what, exactly?

Edit: I see that they are 11-1 with wins over Kansas, Army, and Kent State. They lost to Iowa which is about as bad as a loss to SMU last year. I thought they were 10-2, though. As such, it's not as bad as I thought. Undefeated in conference and they did at least schedule AQ OOC opponents. Fair enough.

Plus we weren't helped at all Championship Saturday. I remember thinking if A, B and C happen we might have a chance. Nothing fell our way that day.

NIU had several things happen that helped them in addition to the opportunity to beat a team ahead of them.

You know who everyone should be mad at? The Big East. They are the reason this happened. They couldn't field a team in the top 16.

I disagree. We wouldn't have stopped their offense. We might have won but it certainly wouldn't have been a blowout.

The MAC was a good conference this year and to go undefeated in conference play was no small feat. What's more is NIU crushed nearly everyone in conference save Kent State who was also undefeated in conference play.

Line them up against Iowa right now and I'd take them to win by 2 TDs.

Not sure if serious. We held Kellen Moore in check... I think we would have been able to stop these guys. Our defense against SMU? Maybe not. Our defense at the end of the year? Yup.

They lost to Iowa. They beat Kansas by one TD, and they only turned it over once... not four times in the red zone. Toledo was within a TD of them.

TCU lost by 2 points to a Heisman winner in our first game, and then played and got reffed on a terrible game against SMU. Then beat Boise on the blue turf, nobody does that. TCU wins by 20.

Toledo back-doored a TD in the 4th to make the score closer than the game actually was. IIRC, NIU was up 17 or so in the 4th. Regardless, Toledo's not a bad team by any means and the fact that they are 5th best or so in the MAC speaks volumes about the conference this year.

Compare that to last year's MWC (a 2-team show) and I hope you're getting the picture.

Funny how we roast these guys for a loss to Iowa 15 weeks ago and in the same breath have the audacity to play the "our defense at the end of the year" card as if we're the only ones in the country that can improve over the course of a season.

For the record, I also think we beat NIU with last year's team but that doesn't really matter. The chips fell their way and I wish them luck.

The debate between the two teams is irrelevant. A non-BCS team has no shot of sneaking into a BCS bowl with 2 losses. NIU lost at the best possible time (although how they lost is still a mystery; they led virtually the whole way against Iowa) and went undefeated through a very much improved MAC.

Btw, those talking poorly of Iowa and how it's such a terrible loss: Michigan State also lost to Iowa...at home.
