Just saw in the NYTimes (sorry, but I look at it every once in awhile) that the Balcones distillery in Waco, Texas, (yes, THAT Waco), submitted the single malt scotch that beat all the other Scottish/English/Irish entries for taste in this category. Best taste of all. SO, Waco can't be all bad, can it?

Balcones makes some OUTSTANDING spirits.

They also make a booze from "Texas hill country herbs and native plants". Worst stuff I can remember trying to drink.

It's not Scotch, it is single malt whisky. And there's some fishiness afoot. No way a 17-year-old Balvenie Doublewood loses to an entrant from a distillery less than 3 years old. I believe this calls for extensive testing on my part.

This is exactly what I was about to say.

1) it can not be Scotch if it is not from Scotland. This is single malt whiskey.

2). Horsecrap. Even quarter-casking it, theres no way it beat out some of the more established distilleries. That have been doing this for centuries.

3). Absolutely agree that extensive testing is required. I will drink some of my Glenfiddich 18 to get my palate ready.

Scotch is classified as a whisky, not whiskey. It's been said by the Irish that the Scots are so cheap, they don't even put an "e" in whisky.

I leave scotch to people in Scotland and Vodka to my friends in Russia. No need to mess up a good thing. And please to give me this Tito's [ deposit from a bull that looks like Art Briles ].

F-i-L is right, Balvenie Doublewood is nothing short of perfection. I think I'll have a glass before bed.

Good call...think I'll join you.

Nice selection there

Thanks. I'd like a Talisker or islay malt in there too, and a good blended, but it keeps me happy. I have a rather significant birthday next week, so I expect to have at least one rediculously nice addition soon, even if I have to buy it myself. But if you want to see variety, you should pm TxFrog1999 to post his whisky bar. Need a wide-angle lens.

Captain Morgan and Bacardi with all those great whiskys and bourbons is like Rosy O'Donald in a photo with supermodels.

Just about everywhere else except the U.S. Bacardi announces it is a Cuban rum formula....even on the commercial with the 50's party if you look closely at the bottle they show. I prefer Jamaican rum because it tastes and smells like rum, not funny tasting vodka.

And yeah, Balvenie is yummy. If I win the lotto I will buy some of the Macallan 25 y.o.

One of y'all is going to have to let me taste a few of your favorite Scotches; I have only had the cheap stuff and to me it tastes like dust. The good stuff must be good though, otherwise why would so many people swear by it and pay through the nose for it?
