USA Today: The 10 greatest QBs in Texas HS football history

Texas is known as a hotbed for high school football talent. The state is known for churning out elite prospects and sending them to the next level, ready to produce from the moment they arrive on campus.

Some of Texas’ brightest and most recognizable talents over the years have manned the quarterback position. From national record holders to Gatorade Players of the Year and All-Americans, the state has seen more than its fair share of elite quarterbacks rise through the high school ranks.

With this in mind, USA Today High School Sports took a crack at ranking the top 10 quarterbacks in Texas high school football history. Criteria taken into account includes high school, college and NFL success.

this list is basically "these are guys i have heard of here in nyc" and i am not going to actually do research beyond guys who have made the nfl.

mahommes? seriously just showed you are grabbing nfl names and not their high school careers. andrew luck was an elite prospect, but that career passing total doesn't come close to the top 25 in career yardage in texas high school football.

if you are talking high school playing where are the detmer brothers? jack mildren? chuck curtis? the list goes on and this is why i have lost interest in national news sources

It did not say they were measured only on high school accomplishments, just that they played in high school in Texas. I have no problem with looking at their entire careers.

BTW, Brees was too short to make it in college, let alone the pros, as was the popular view on this board a few years ago.

It actually specifically says that it takes into account college and NFL success.

I admit I missed that at first glance.

A bit of topic, but I sat in front of Ty Detmer on a puddle jumper to Green Bay after he signed. I could not believe that skinny kid was going to be an NFL QB. I guess I was mostly right.

Lots of great careers in high school but not so much college and less for NFL.

Warren McVea was a wonder in high school, had some flashed in college (began fighting injuries starting with the Coaches All-Star Game before college), had a few TD;s in the pros. But that bi-district game against Lee in '63....my oh my.

problem though is they aren't waiting things very equal and its is quite obvious they have heavily weighted to nfl careers over high school and college with the exception of murray who is a current player.

two examples, graham harrell and greg mcelroy. based upon high school and college careers an argument could be made for them being better quarterbacks than luck, stafford, and mahomes.

they wouldn't be as good a prospects and have the upside, but based upon their numbers in high school in terms of production and wins and at college they are every bit as successful if not moreso.

mcelroy's senior year at slc was one of the great high school seasons in texas history with over 4,500 yards, over 50 td's, and was the state's player of the year as slc went 16-0 for another state title

he led bama to 14-0 and a national title as a junior and then barely did anything in the pros.

stafford won a state title at highland park, disappointed a bit at uga, and has had a long career in the nfl but has he been great or is it a matter of his physical tools?

luck wasn't on great teams in high school or college and carried his teams in the nfl, but is this a matter of his physical tools?

mahomes was good at whitehouse, but not elite. was was good at tech, but not elite, and has taken off under reid at kc.

the other big problem with these all time list is the game of football has dramatically changed to the point a guy like jack mildren who was not only a key piece for a great abilene cooper team, but also was the trigger man for the ou wishbone that started that great run for the sooners in the 70's

mildren was such a great talent barry switzer rented an apartment in abilene to stay close to the much sought after recruit.

how do you compare him to the others?

My Dad graduated from Alamo Heights in 63 and he still to this day talks about McVea v. Baer.

Have you seen Tom Brady's combine picture? Would have never guessed he would be the GOAT by looking at that picture.

I was visiting my relatives in San Antonio for Thanksgiving and watched the game on TV. Wow.
There is a 4-parter on YouTube. Part is about the buildup with the game coming one week after the JFK assassination.
