Two Possible DC Candidates

...if TCU decides to go that route. Below are capsule summaries for two current defensive coordinators, both from the ACC. I selected them based on their past performance. You can easily Google them to learn about each one in much more detail:

>

Tyler Santucci, DC/LB at Duke since January 2023. Mostly a defensive position coach previously at Texas State, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, and Texas A&M. Santucci coached under Mike Elko at Texas A&M, who brought him over to Duke as DC/LB. Elko was just hired to replace Jimbo Fisher as head coach and is expected to give the Aggie DC job to the recent acting head coach, Elijah Robinson. This season, Duke's defense allowed only 19.8 points per game, 21st best in the country. Santucci is 35 years old with 13 years coaching experience.

Tony Gibson, DC/LB at North Carolina State since 2019. His defense this year ranked 25th nationally, averaging 20.2 points per game. He previously was DC/LB at West Virgina where he coached from 2013-2018. Nominated for 2021 Broyles Award given to the nation's top assistant coach. While at WVA, named one of the nation's hottest recruiters. Gibson is age 51 with 28 years of coaching experience.

I grew up an Oilers fan in the 70s. . . So I know a thing or two about futility. The one thing that was redeeming about those “Luv Ya Blue” teams was every week, win or lose, you knew that whoever they played was NOT looking forward to their game. Because whoever it was, those Oilers were going to beat the scheiss out of them physically. That’s what I miss about some of Gary’s teams, and what I want to see from TCU defense, and I don’t give a scheiss about the scheme- I just want to see TCU dish out the pain.

Seems a little like (from what few games I’ve seen) this is how Tulane’s defense plays.

we aren't firing the DC. We are content to suck apparently.
I believe I agree with your 1st sentence. If firing is the decision, it’s taken way too long for both TCU & Gillespie. At this point, it’s beginning to look like Gillespie with modifications.
If so, I can’t wait to see what that looks like. If it’s “2nd verse, same as the first”; then we’re all going to be disappointed.

Excellent work here! Either one would be a huge improvement over what we’ve endured for the last two years. Looks like Santucci will be looking for a spot, but he won’t be in the marketplace very long. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that Sonny works at that fast a pace.

Nice. I wish and hope for a change. What type of defense do they run? A traditional 4-3-4?

I think we should run a 5-1-5 or 6-1-4 type of defense. Get a ton of pressure and lots of help in the secondary.
It's not really the first number that dictates how many people rush the QB...it's whether the DC decides to send them. CJG preferred to keep everyone 10 yards off the ball to make sure he slowed down the game and only give up 40 in the first half, and then own the other team in the second half when they were running out the clock...almost exactly the thing that got GP fired.
