Tulsa World: Punch won't sideline OU's Tyrus Thompson for Cotton Bowl

NORMAN - It appears Tyrus Thompson's punching TCU defensive end Stansly Maponga won't cost him a chance to play in the Cotton Bowl.

In an email to the Tulsa World Thursday afternoon, Big 12 Conference associate commissioner Bob Burda confirmed that the conference initiated a review of the play from Oklahoma's victory over TCU last Saturday, and determined no further disciplinary action was necessary.

Thompson, OU's starting right tackle the past two games, was assessed a 15-yard personal foul penalty after he was caught punching the side of Maponga's helmet during a play late in the first half. As Landry Jones threw incomplete, Thompson blocked the TCU defensive end, pinned him to the turf and threw a punch before getting to his feet. ...

I watched the game and replay and it looked to me that the TCU player blatantly threw himself into Thompson's fist!

Will call the conference office today for clarification of just how many punches are allowed before a player is suspended....

Was wondering what disciplinary action was taken such that no "further" action was deemed necessary. And I'm not gonna buy any argument that says a 15-yard penalty is "disciplinary action" as we all know that it is not. I also will contact the Big 12 office today and inquire to what extent assault is permitted in their league. Before anyone claims that I'm "soft" on these issues, I'm actually hopeful that the response will be that assault is not only permitted but encouraged. Makes for more interesting football in the era of "protect defenseless players."

Anyone notice the Sooners 2012 schedule over on the left column beside the story? Apparently, they won last week's game against us 24-175.

If it had been a TCU player attacked by a guy from Oklahoma in a bar on Jacksboro Highway it would have been on he front page of the Dallas Morning News.
