Tuition up to $61,000!!!

Put that much money into an investment account for the kid and when they turn 59 1/2 they would have close to $15MM. No chance that $61k/year tuition plus room/board/etc X 4 years will ever make economic sense. Total insanity…

Listened to a podcast with John Goff on it and he made the comment that he one time put a pencil to it and determined he had about $1,000 invested in total in his education (public school then accounting degree from University of Texas). It’s unreal what free federal guaranteed student loan money has done to push the costs of higher education to over the last few decades…
Who was it said, “Get the govt out of student loan programs and watch tuition plummet”?

I was speaking in a bit of hyperbole. For most folks spending $60k plus whatever room and board is, you’re going to graduate from TCU etc with $350k+ in debt with some huge interest rate. Good luck getting out of that hole unless you go into investment banking or something along those lines. I mean, I graduated with zero debt (incredibly lucky) and applied for a credit card after college and my monthly credit limit was $750, which is hilarious.

College certainly doesn’t set apart talent, so I agree with your comments around that for sure.

Sure but the statement was college itself doesn't make sense for the vast majority, I disagree. TCU itself? Definitely. No way in hell I see value is 350k for 4 years. Already told my daughter to not go there, simply not worth it.

Plenty of state schools where the value is pretty darn good! Person I hired without a degree wants to be ad advisor. I'm pushing for the firm to pay for her online degree (requisite for CFP which is stupid) then pay for CFP. That will be one of hell of marketing tool.

Democracks can step up and empty their bank accounts to support the programs they want. Support for invasions, college loan repayment, free Community College should be a tax form entry every year. Minimum 5 digit left of decimal point for those willing to admit they are libtards! Fair?be

I mean I feel like you’re being a bit nit picky about my original post. My point is if the of college of choice is expensive and requires loans, then for many people it is not worth it.

It literally says college does not make sense for the vast majority. That’s the first sentence I even clarified that if you meant TCU then yes I agree. Cheap college is worth it for a much higher percentage.

Everybody needs tax cuts.

I mean the effective tax rate for the .01% is 8%. That is just ridiculous. I was at 16% net last year (only because I deferred bonus to this year. This year will be closer to 20%

If you have a true VAT with exemptions for necessities the .01% magically goes from 8% to way higher

Ridiculous to talk about tax cuts. Conversation should be exclusively on what government is spending (or hoarding). Fix that insanity and everyone gets massive tax cuts.

Both at the same time would help. Incremental improvement. Freeze spending and institute small targeted cuts each year.

No one like that's answer because it aligns with neither party.

Seems like we're always about $3,000 less than SMU and $3,000 more than Baylor.

This year (12-18 hrs, undergrad, tuition+required fees):

SMU: $64,460
TCU: $57,220
BU: $55,044

These gaps track over the past 20 years with TCU about half of a 1-year hike ahead of Baylor and SMU about a 2-year hike ahead of TCU.

But hardly anyone is paying full freight at any of the 3.

FWIW, full-time tuition and fees at UT Austin is $13,576 for residents. $48,712 for non-residents.

I applied to and was accepted to all of UT, A&M, SMU, and TCU in 2003, and I absolutely made the right call going to TCU and loved every bit of my TCU experience. But you’d be hard pressed to show me how it would be remotely responsible to choose TCU over UT today at a $43k/yr premium.

Two of my friends from high school chose A&M at about $8,000 per year in the 90’s. I chose instead to pay about $15,000 per year for TCU. Both of those Aggies are CEOs now, one making over $4 million per year.

Meanwhile with my more expensive TCU degree

I also was accepted in 2003.

Back then, TCU was known for being a very cheap option for a private school.

Nowadays, it feels bad, but I don't recommend TCU to most people unless their families are very very wealthy (I'm talking 5-10M+ net worth) and well connected and they are just going to college to go to college. Otherwise there are better options where you will learn just as well and get a bigger network when you graduate. The "small class sizes" and "intimate" learning do not even remotely justify the cost difference. Employers don't care about many things less than how well you knew your professors.
