It’s pretty wild the bulk of our 2-deep team is from portal transfers. A lot of these guys were top 100 recruits in Texas that we likely wouldn’t have gotten originally. A lot are from the metroplex and wanted to come home. It reminds me of KSt making a living for 20 yrs with transfers under Bill Snyder. I hope it works.

It makes it hard as a fan to get to know the players. Bud Clark and Josh Hoover are the only starters I can think of that we got out of high school. I know Sonny was portal master at SMU and I believe it is working if these transfers are all starting over the kids we recruited from high school. I also like that you get a proven guy that played D1 at Cal, Nevada, Florida St, Alabama, LaTech, Navy, etc versus a kid from high school that has not been proven. I guess less time to develop them and wonder if the transfers care about TCU and the community if only here a short time. This has to be a record for TCU. I haven’t dug into other rosters, but imagine lots of schools look similar. I can think of several studs that we lost.

No question we had a couple of rough years in recruiting, especially CGPs final class. Dykes has done a decent job filling the gaps.

It will be interesting to see what our roster looks like in three years when the oldest players on it would have committed to TCU under Dykes, if college football even has a structure by that point that the question is relevant.

They might all be employees of the CFP who are subcontracted to the teams in some kind of draft system by them, who knows?

We’ve lost a few good players to portal. But overall I’d argue we’ve gotten much more.

I’m not even sure these guys would start at TCU. Mathis was All Big 12 and rated #1 DE in the portal but didn’t start much at Nebraska. He was drafted #200.

Zach Evans never started at TCU or ole Miss, despite him being #1 RB in portal and them them paying top dollar. He was also #1 recruit in state of Tx out of high school. He was drafted #215.

Jordan Hudson was the #25 recruit in state of Texas. He only had 400 yards last year at smu and only one catch last week against Nevada. I think he left knowing it would be hard for him to start here.

It seems we definitely brought in more talent than we lost. I think Evans and Mathis just wanted the money and despite high price tag they didn’t do much so not a big loss. I’m sure they would’ve done better staying at TCU.

It would be interesting to see a running net transfer rating. For instance, if a player that transferred out accumulated positive playing time would decrease your rating and a player that transferred in that accumulated positive playing time would increase your rating.

Zach Evans was a fool. Kid had electric moves and speed, but dictated his playing time and probably hurt team chemistry. After his humdrum seasons at Ole Miss, it's unsurprising to see him cut and gone from the NFL.

IIRC, Tommy Blake developed serious mental issues. Terrible shame, as he was a special player.

Problem with so many kids is they were stars in HS. They could be sheltered in HS. They get to these places where the lights get really bright, and the community support they had is gone so they end struggling. It often gets pushed as mental illness or lack of mental toughness. I don't think that is a fair assessment. I think it is young people who just need some time to mature.

Dykes has his faults, but he is a master when it comes to the transfer portal and NIL. He is probably the best coach in the country in these two areas. When I look at the transfers that have come to TCU many of them are not your typical transfers. I know we have had a few knuckleheads transfer in over the years, but I don't seem to recall any of these to be on that list. There is an old saying that there is a reason why players transfer. They either weren't good enough or the coach didn't want them around anymore. The players TCU is getting are very good players who are pretty grounded. They really needed a change of scenery for a variety of reasons.

Speaking of transfers I met this board's favorite Sucks to BU homer a few weeks ago. Nice guy. Confirmed Dabney was their best player, and he is really upset that he transferred to TCU. The other thing he brought up was how they focused so much on winning football under a previous coach that they lost sight of everything else.

Think this either works, or it does not work well at all. No in between. Either the culture can be built with new guys, or no culture and then have to worry about how they gel.

Hoping it works. Hoping they go all in. Hoping they can be locker room leaders for the younger players so in a couple of years we are not still relying so much on the transfers and can develop Frog Factor.

Totally agree. There’s a chance you have a bunch of random guys that don’t really know each other, don’t gel, and don’t love TCU. There’s a chance they come together and play well together. I think all the tram building stuff like LaDainian speaking to them helps. Getting all these top recruits out of high school would be ideal but it’s the world we live in. The portal gives us an opportunity to compete with programs we don’t recruit well against. Good example of this is Jared Wiley. He saw limited action in 3 yrs at UT. Transferred to TCU, was all conference (in UT’s same conference), and helped us to nation championship. I think the portal is big net positive for TCU. It helps we are in DFW metroplex, have great facilities, and Dykes is portal star recruiter.

If you gave a good coach the 3rd string from Bama/Georgia and a year to develop them and give reps as starters…..How would this team do in year two? I think this team would make playoffs.
Obviously not all our transfers are bluechips but hoping some of these guys are diamond in the rough, like Johnny Hodges.

Sure seems like this group was picked due to good playing experience at other teams and the ability to develop. Just seems like the team is ready to go.

Dabney was a stud against us last year. Was excited to get him.

I would think there are a lot of pretty good athletes who are not going to start at Alabama but could still contribute elsewhere.
