Topeka Capital-Journal: Kansas LB coach hired by TCU

By The Capital-Journal

DeMontie Cross, who coached linebackers last season at Kansas, has left Charlie Weis' staff, reportedly for a job at TCU.

Special teams coordinator Clint Bowen, who worked with KU's secondary last season, will take over for Cross as linebackers coach. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Cross was expected to join Gary Patterson's staff as a linebackers coach.

Cross, who played at Missouri, also coached at Wisconsin, Iowa State and Sam Houston and in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills. Weis had intended to retain his entire staff after a 1-11 season but cautioned his assistants about interviewing elsewhere.

“I said, ‘If I hear you’re looking for another job, I’m looking for another coach," Weis said recently. "It’s a very simple system."

Fran once fired a coach because he interviewed with his "home" school. He made a deal, nobody would leave in the first 3 years if they followed him to Fort Worth.

I always tell a new hire/associate: If you're unhappy, tell me. If you feel as though you're undervalued/underutilized/underpaid, tell me. If you're looking for a new job, tell me.

If I have absolute clarity in any situation, things tend to turn out just fine. If someone's unhappy with their job (or me) and is looking for another, just tell me so I can be aware, and ultimately prepare. I'll even assist them in their career search, all I ask is that I be kept informed.

Good policy to have. Personally I think that's the sign of a healthy company, and a place people want to stay at.

My first real job out of college actively mocked people when they left. As you might imagine they had a pretty high turnover rate.

Personally if I was looking I would not tell a soul until I had an offer in hand.

And it goes both ways, if I was selling a business, as few as possible would know until it was a done deal.

I agree, play it as close to vest as you can. People always want openness, but if they know your shopping around "attitudes always change" IMHO.
