I'd like to recommend the one and only
Shipley+Donuts+Logo.gif

as the best donuts ever made. Sure wish there were some of their stores left in Fort Worth. Are there any in Dallas??

I like their kolaches but as Ron Swanson said here some may think they're not "elite."

Good to know. There used to be one at McCart just south of 20 but it closed down and is now a wedding bakery I think..

I like Dale's just fine but I never thought dale's was better than Shipley's at anything.

The place in Granbury is pretty good, but you can't beat the Czech Stop.

If you are in San Antonio, Bulverde has a really good kolache shop. I guess it is still there, haven't been back since '95.

I don't really give a crap about donuts, they're delicious, but I go kolache every time.

Now, when I say kolache, I'm talking about sausage/jalapeno/cheese. Yes, I like to mix it up occasionally with a fruit/desert kolache, but I don't base my kolache rankings on them. If I do go for a desert kolache, I usually go the cream cheese route though, those are awesome.

The best off the top of my head, based on my experience....

Prasek's Smokehouse in Hillje just south of El Campo on 59
Hruska's on HWY 71 in Ellinger
JR's Smokehouse on 59 about 50 miles SW of Houston

Very good....

Christy's Donuts on West Gray and Montrose in Houston
Snowflake Donuts (Asian owned, Vietnamese I believe) on Webster and Fannin in Downtown Houston (hole in the wall connected to a gas station, looks terrible, but it's very good). They have some croissant kolaches that are really good as well

Good, but way overrated...

Czech Stop in West, TX

The worst....

The Kolache Factory chain, straight garbage. People always bring them in at the office, like they're bring some awesome treats. Freaking ignorants

Aside: Has anyone ever tried "The Original Kolache Shoppe" in Houston? I've never been, but have heard really good things about it. It's down near 610/45 South on Telephone Road.

Anyone remember Spudnuts? It was a chain in central Texas (Austin) back when. They were famous for using potato flour for their products. Mighty tasty.

And I'm sure there are tons of great places to get kolaches in the hill country where a lot of the Czech settlers ended up, I just don't really know the area that well

Growing up, Shipley's and Jack & Jill were the best. Don't much care anymore. There's a great kolache place on Meadowbrook about 2 blocks east of the intersection with Handley. Skipped a lot of first period Theatre classes at that place my senior year. Another good kolache place in the funky shopping center on the SE corner of N Tarrant Pkwy and Park Vista/Ray White.
